“Sorry,” Nathan muttered.

“Blood slushies?” Becket said from the front. “You flatter us, dear boy. We’re almost there, less than ten minutes to arrival.”

CHAPTERTWENTY-SEVEN

Mitchel

Mitchel steadiedhis thoughts as they approached the funeral home at a snail’s pace. Time ticked away as the moment for them to enact their plan drew near.

Becket parked the limo a block from the location, out of sight, and the group crept forward, hidden in the cover of adjacent buildings. When they were as close as they could get without being seen, Mitchel took Nathan and Josh by their shoulders.

“All right, guys, stay together. Don’t take any unnecessary risks. Call out if you get into a sticky situation or need our help. We’ll wait for you here. No matter what, don’t let them see you, okay?” Mitchel instructed.

They nodded. “Yes, sir.”

Mitchel squeezed their shoulders, then let them go. He hated to send friends into danger. “Thank you. Good luck.”

Side by side, Nathan and Josh continued forward, their heads tipped up, noses already scenting the air, while Mitchel stayed back with the vampire contingent.

It was impossible not to be worried.

Ann seemed to sense his distress. She stepped in close. “They’ll be fine. We won’t let anything happen to your people.”

He appreciated the sentiment, but so much was on the line. Sinclair kidnapped and at risk. Nathan and Josh sent into the fray. The rest of them on the verge of battle. Even as his heart thumped faster in his chest, his muscles were tense and coiled, ready for whatever came next.

Which was to wait.

Wait for them to come back with their report.

Every minute was excruciating.

Becket broke the uncomfortable silence and said to Mitchel in a quiet voice, “I drove Sinclair to Borson at the beginning of the semester.”

“You did?”

“Mm-hmm. I love him like my own family.” Becket frowned. “I didn’t want to leave him there after the way Nathan and his friends treated him. But Sinclair insisted, and he was right. They’re obviously friends now. It’s good to see that.”

Mitchel held the vampire’s gaze, and despite the tension, a smile curled his lips. “Sinclair has made quite the impression on our pack. I’m only sorry it took so long for us to come around.”

“No doubt,” Becket murmured. “I dare say it was unavoidable. He’s a force of nature, our Sinclair.”

Ann smiled. “You seem to have made quite the impression as well. Sinclair says he loves you.”

Does he? He hadn’t said that to Mitchel. Not yet. But the words made his heart sing.

“Do you love him?” Becket asked.

“Yes,” he said, voice infused with confidence. If only he could get the little vampire back to tell him so himself. And to hear it in return.

“Good. That makes all of us, then.” Becket clapped Mitchel on the back.

They waited for what felt like hours but really was only fifteen minutes until Nathan and Josh came jogging back with news.

Nathan gave the report. “Sinclair is definitely in that building.”

Relief washed over the group. They’d guessed right.

“There are six humans guarding him. They are clustered together in two groups. They don’t seem to be expecting a rescue party. No one is stationed at the obvious points of entry.”
