“All good news,” Luther said. “Three vampires and three werewolves against six humans should make this simple. Remember, let us go first. Stay together, stay calm, and no one will get hurt. Nathan, which entrance do you recommend?”

“We should be able to stay hidden if we approach the loading dock. There’s a regular door next to the garage door. No telling if it’s unlocked.”

“Assuming we aren’t discovered, I can pick it,” Luther said. “If we’re discovered before I manage the lock, Ann will break a nearby window as our point of entry.”

Ann gave a curt nod.

“Everyone ready?” Mitchel asked.

They all agreed, and Mitchel nodded at Luther. “We’ll be right behind you.”

“Let’s go.” Luther stalked on silent feet toward the funeral home. It reminded Mitchel of hunting game. Vampires could surely take down deer as easily as any werewolf.

Ann and Becket flanked Luther from a few feet behind, followed by Mitchel, with Josh and Nathan bringing up the rear. They made it to the loading bay without any alarms being raised, and Luther set to work on the lock with an array of metal picks while the rest of them kept a lookout.

Mitchel’s heart raced. He was spoiling for a fight. But more than that, he was anticipating Sinclair, safe and sound in his arms.

“Got it,” Luther whispered. “Here we go.” He pushed the door open, and they filed inside one by one.

They saw no one at first, but as Josh indicated the direction from which he could scent Sinclair, two men rounded the corner. And that was when their cover was blown.

With reflexes so fast Mitchel couldn’t track the movement, Luther shot the first man before the humans could even raise their guns. The scent of burning gunpowder poisoned the air.

The second man let out a cry of alarm and spun to flee without taking a shot. Ann had no such hesitation. She shot him before he completed the turn and added a second bullet for good measure.

Two down, four to go, but they’d lost the element of surprise. The remaining men had been warned. Whether they could capitalize on that or not could be the difference of life and death.

They pressed forward faster. Footsteps pounded from somewhere up ahead. They’d have company soon.

“There are six of them!” Sinclair’s voice pierced the chaos from a distance.

Mitchel homed in on the room he thought the voice was coming from. It took everything in him to stay behind Luther and not charge down the hallway to get to him.

“On it. Stay put, Sinclair,” Luther answered, but Sinclair came bounding out of a room farther down the hall, slammed into the wall, breaking glass, and seconds later was brandishing a fire extinguisher as a weapon.

Well, shit.Sinclair was more badass than Mitchel would have guessed.

“I knocked out the one in my room.” Sinclair headed their way, but another man emerged not far behind him.

“Down!” Luther aimed, Sinclair ducked, and a shot rang out.

But the man kept coming.

Another shot and he slumped to the ground.

“Behind you!” Sinclair warned. They spun, but not fast enough.

Shots echoed from the other direction.

Next to Mitchel, Nathan sank like a stone.

The vampires couldn’t shoot back because the wolves blocked their line of sight. Josh dropped down over Nathan to shield him.

Mitchel launched himself at the two shooters, barreled into them, and took the fight to the ground. Gunfire blasted, but he wasn’t hit. The wolf inside him howled to be set free.

This close, it was a wrestling match. Mitchel was bigger, stronger, and much, much madder. He dodged the guns, too much inside their range for either to get a shot at him.

Fingers clawed at his eyes, but he wouldn’t be outmatched by humans. With a sickening crunch, he snapped one man’s neck. The body crumpled to the floor.
