“He was my mentor when I was at school.”

“He was your Prep-the-Prepster?” I ask, grinning a little bit. “You actually did that program?”

“Of course I did it.”

“Such a nerd.”

He lets his head fall back and releases a laugh. “Ah, you’re never gonna let that go, are you?”

I shake my head. “Not a chance in hell, mister.”

The door behind me opens and I turn to step out of the way.

“Woah, sorry about that,” the man says, a charming smile on his face. He reaches out to give me his hand “You must be Remmy. I’m Dr. Logan Becker.”

I smile, clutching his hand with mine and giving it a good shake. “Hi, Dr. Becker. Thank you so much for sorting things out for us today.”

He nods. “Anything I can do to help, especially for this asshole,” he says, thumbing in the direction of where Ben is still sitting at his desk.

“Good to see you, too,Dr. Becker,” Ben says, a good natured smile on his face as he teases his old mentor.

Logan chuckles as he closes his office door.

“Congratulations to you both,” he says, walking over to where Ben has vacated the desk chair. “I didn’t realize you were expecting.”

He sits down and looks at me expectantly, and I realize I’m supposed to say something about the baby.

“Well, actually—”

“We’re very excited about it,” Ben says, interrupting me. His eyes don’t look my way, but he does walk over and wrap an arm around my shoulders. “It wasn’t expected, but sometimes the best things in life come in the form of surprises.”

I grin at the way Ben says that, and so does Logan.

“Oh gross. You’re one of those super-in-love couples, aren’t you?”

I laugh, finding his observation really funny.

“Absolutely,” Ben says.

“I’m actually really obsessed with him in a creepy way,” I add on, wrapping my arms around his waist and snuggling in close. “I love to watch him when he’s sleeping.”

Ben rolls his eyes and Logan laughs.

“You know, I’veneverbeen in this hospital before.”

“It’s new,” Logan and Ben say at the same time.

Ben waves a hand out in front of himself and Logan takes the invitation to continue.

“I just got the tour when I started, so forgive me if I sound like a brochure,” Logan jokes. “Roth Memorial has only been here in its current state for three years. The old hospital was due for some serious renovations. The Roth family completely overhauled everything. They’re the reason I have a job, actually. Apparently a big part of their plan was to expand pediatrics.”

I barely hide my eyeroll as I think about Lennon’s family and their philanthropic mission. Noble? Yes. Irritating as all hell to have my ex’s new girlfriend’s name everywhere I sit? Absolutely.

But I quickly push that thought aside.

“Even before all of that,” I say. “I’ve just…never been seriously injured or had any reason to come to the hospital before.”

“Well, if you’re gonna have to go to the hospital for anything, at least it’s something you’re looking forward to, right?”
