“Are you okay?”

Her words seemed to jerk him out of his trance. “Yes, perfect.”

He reached across the table and covered her hand with his, then bounced his gaze between her and their son before clamping it back onto hers. “I’m the luckiest man alive. I don’t know what I’d ever do without the two of you.”

Her heart swelled. She turned her hand over to grip his. “Me, too. I can’t imagine my life any other way.”

After lunch, Blake ran up to his room to select the book he’d want her to read to him before he took his nap. As was their routine.

Her husband’s loving, penetrating gaze stayed on her as she stacked the dirty plates next to the sink and wiped the crumbs off the table. Not that she minded, but she couldn’t help but wonder what had gotten into him today.

When she turned to face the sink, he came up behind her, wrapped his arms around her waist, and pulled her tightly to his hard-muscled body. She melted to him. Inhaling deeply, she took in his familiar, leathery scent. Want and need sizzled through her. All these years and he still had the same effect on her.

He nuzzled her neck so she tilted her head to give him better access. At the juncture of her neck and shoulder, he pressed his lips lightly, then trailed kisses upward, stopping momentarily to tease her ticklish spot behind her earlobe, causing her to giggle and squirm slightly. His hold tightened as he nibbled on her earlobe.

When she sighed with pleasure, he spun her around and pressed his lips softly to hers. His hands skimmed up her sides not stopping until they cupped her cheeks, warming her face, holding her gently, lovingly. She parted her lips to invite him in. Dipping his tongue into her mouth he probed softly, teasing, preparing her for what was to come.

Heat soared in her core and zipped through her veins. Her whole body burned with need. She tightened her grip on his shoulders and pulled him closer. He deepened the kiss, exactly what she’d hoped for.

“Mommy. I ready.”

Jack stilled, but kept his lips on hers as they slipped into a frown.

She giggled and edged her head back.

He pouted like a little boy. A pout similar to the one she’d seen on their son on occasion. It was almost too adorable to walk away.

“Mommy.”

But duty called. She slipped out of her husband’s arms.

His bottom lip jutted out farther.

She tapped her finger to his lip and smiled. “Turn that frown upside down.” She winked. “Good things come to those who wait.”

He playfully patted her rump when she slipped past him. “Read fast.”

Glancing over her shoulder, she caught his eyebrows waggling.

In Blake’s room, she held the covers up and their son slid into bed with a book in hand about a boy’s first adventure on a plane. It was his favorite. She snuggled in beside him, took the book, and opened the thick cardboard cover.

She’d read only a few pages before her handsome husband’s muscular frame filled the doorway. He leaned against the door jamb with his arms crossed over his broad chest and stared at her with dreamy brown eyes. A few more pages and surely their son would be asleep. The promise emitting from her spouse’s darkening gaze had her hoping so anyhow.

Within a couple of minutes, her son’s eyes drifted closed, and she carefully eased away as to not risk waking him.

Jack’s concentrated gaze deepened, warming her straight to her core. Her pulse raced. She still couldn’t help but wonder what had gotten into him today. The way he gazed at her was a tad different than normal. It was oddly intense and penetrating.

He reached out to her, and she accepted the invitation. His hand closed gently, yet firmly, around hers, and he led them down the hall to their bedroom. It had been a while since they’d taken a nooner. Between their son and her in-laws, it was hard to find the privacy to squeeze one in.

Her husband hesitated at the bedroom doorway and glanced over his shoulder.

“When will Mom and Dad be back?” he chuckled. “I want to know how much time I have to work my magic.”

In response to what must have been the puzzled reaction she was unable to hide, he spoke again before she replied.

“What?”

How did he not remember where they were? “They’re at the cabin for the next week. Opening it up for the season.”
