She huffed. “Being a virgin doesn’t mean that I’m repulsed by men.”

“Are you part of a sexless cult then?”

Her smile broadened.

"Religion?"

Maya shook her head.

“So, you’re telling me that a beautiful girl willingly foregoes life’s greatest pleasure for no particular reason? Blink twice if your pastor is listening to this conversation right now.”

Maya blushed furiously, ears burning. “The concept that all religious people wait for marriage is archaic. Can we be done with this topic now and talk about you instead?”

“Me? I’m definitely waiting until marriage. Can’t wait to have sex; hope it’s fun.”

Maya giggled, generating real magic in the air. “I meant, if we are discussing my sex life, yours should also be on the table.”

I shrugged. “I’m an open book. I’ll tell you everything. For starters, I’m not into virgins.”

“Never?”

“Not even during my first time.” I had no patience to teach the fundamental skills in bed. “It’s too much work, and they usually have specific reasons for waiting.”

Maya narrowed her eyes.

“Tell me I’m wrong.”

“I’m not waiting for any specific reasons, per se."

“But you do have expectations for your first time.”

“I don’t want to have any regrets.” She plopped her butt down on the couch, wine in hand. “And maybe I won’t if it’s with the right man, someone even my crazy family might approve of.”

Then why did you come up to my room?I couldn’t help but wonder. Sex was a given when going back to someone’s hotel room. Did she really assume “a drink” truly meant a drink?

This girl was either naïve or overly optimistic about people’s intentions. She never expected others to behave in an unsuitable manner because clearly Maya was sheltered. Explicitly, a good girl.

Strangely, she ended up in the lairs of the worst man.

“Did I overshare by telling you of my sexual status?” she asked unexpectedly.

With a deep sigh, I slid next to her on the couch. “I only came to this convention so I could scatter my dad’s ashes in Europe. He passed away a few days ago."

The reason I needed to drown in alcohol. Being in Europe brought back memories, and the suffering had hit the hardest tonight.

"I'm so sorry, Brandon," Maya replied without missing a beat, not a trace of shock in her voice. Typically, the news of death brought on some form of outcry.

Maya was... unusual.

Oddly, her lack of reaction was the first appropriate one I had received. It was more comforting than hollow hysterics.

I forced a smile. “Thatwas an example of oversharing. So, no. You didn’t overshare.”

Ignoring my false bravado, she asked gently, "Are you alright?"

I shrugged. "We weren't that close."

"Still, he was your father," she whispered. "No matter the relationship, loss is difficult."
