I moved to the bar area, searching for a bottle of wine, hoping it would mitigate this foreign experience. I wasn’t used to entertaining women, especially during work events.

Maya walked around the room, inspecting it. "What exactly does your job entail?" she awed, seemingly impressed by her surroundings.

Perhaps she was from humble beginnings and not used to the luxuries of life. Bypassing the cheaper wines, I uncorked the most expensive bottle on display and grabbed two glasses. "I manage the finances for our company."

"So, you’re the money guy."

"Something like that." I handed her a wine glass with a generous pour.

"Cheers." She readily clinked our glasses, taking a long, slow sip. A silence enclosed on us for the first time tonight.

A maddening compulsion was reverberating through my pulse, making me act without reason. She had captured my attention from the moment she walked into the bar, causing me to bypass my rule about inviting a woman back to my place.

Though I was an otherwise reckless person, I protected one aspect with zeal—my reputation surrounding women. There was no justification for these impetuous actions. I was simply intrigued to explore every obscure layer she had to offer.

I glanced at her over the rim of my glass. In an almost depraved way, I reached out, thumb lazily stroking her forearm to see if the initial spark was still present.

My racing heart and her raised hair under my pad answered the question. The circular motion held us captive, soothing my broken heart while she steadied her stance. Neither looked away, eyes warring to see who’d blink first.

Hastily, Maya broke the spell by gracing me with the most unforeseen confessions.

"I'm a virgin."

“Huh?”

“I’ve never had sex,” she confirmed. There wasn’t any doubt in her voice, nor was she awkward about the statement. “I wanted to inform you in case you expected more,” she spoke in a matter-of-fact tone, waving her hand amid the minuscule space separating us.

I arrogantly presumed to have graced a woman with the honor of entering my private quarters at long last, and she... just humbled me by putting me back in my place.

Maya wasn’t here for sex.

The irony was so comical that I could only lead with humor. “Wait a minute.” I cocked my head. “Did you think we were going to have sex?”

“Umm.”

“That was presumptuous.”

“I didn’t mean it like that—”

“Eyes up here, please.” I crooked my index finger, insinuating she was staring at my crotch. “I’m more than just a hot body.”

Maya burst out into a fit of laughter, the same one from before that had twisted up my insides.

“I know this must be really embarrassing for you because you’re clearly obsessed with getting in my pants,” I continued. “But I don’t appreciate being objectified.”

The pressure dispersed, leaving us with impish smiles. Hidden behind it was the mood-killing truth—Maya was a virgin, and I wasn’t interested in inexperienced women.

“I should probably get going,” she awkwardly fumbled. “I didn’t realize it got so late.”

Without thinking, I grabbed her elbow to stop her departure. The unintentional possessive act widened my eyes. Maya’s gaze also landed on the hand gripping her tightly, though she remained unphased.

I needed to remove my grasp. If we couldn’t fuck, there was no point further torturing one another.

“No way. I just opened this wine bottle. I’m sure the hotel will charge me an asinine amount for it. You can at least help me finish it.”

She appeared unsure; perhaps the realization had dawned on her that an invitation to a hotel suite generally led to sex.

“Don’t worry, I’m not in the business of stealing the innocence of impressionable young women. But we can have drinks... as friends. And you can tell me why men repulse you.”
