"Can't risk what?" I force his gaze back to mine.

"Can't risk something happening to you. I'll never forgive myself." He swallows hard, and I know this is a momentous occasion for him.

A frog lodges in my throat and I have to force myself not to cry. If there was any doubt that he still had some feelings for me, these few words are enough to let me know that he does.

"Spike, you're going to be right there with me. If there's anyone in this world that I know can protect me, it's you. I'm not worried about them getting me. I'm worried about you getting them." I smile at him.

He stares at me intently but doesn't say anything in return. I continue.

"Besides, once we are in there, if we have a chance to get those women free, we should. They aren't going to accept help from a bunch of dudes after what they've just gone through. You need me there."

It feels like Spike has to think about what I've said for hours, but just a minute or so later he finally gives in.

For the first time. Ever.

"Fine, you can come with us, but I swear to Christ, Jayne, if you move more than six inches from my side, I'm tossing you over my shoulder and storming out." He lifts an eyebrow, waiting for me to fight him. I'm not.

For the first time, I'm finally feeling like I'm part of the team and not just on the sidelines. I don't know what has happened to Spike since he and I broke up, but the growth is real and I'm here for it.

CHAPTER 18

PARTY AND A SHOW

SPIKE

Idon't remember the last time I was this hard riding my bike.

Jayne readjusts herself behind me as we pull up to a side alley. I want to make sure we park close enough that we can get away quickly, but still not so close that people from this party see us getting off the bikes.

I'm doing my absolute best not to focus on anything besides what we have to do, but as Jayne gets off the back of my bike, all I can think about is how damn good she looks.

She's wearing a simple black dress. The top is form-fitting but the bottom is loose. Her hair has a slight curl to it and is falling down her back. She even put on some makeup, which isn’t something she usually does.

The woman is a fucking model in waiting. There has never been any sweetbutt who ever compared to her in looks.

"It's just for the party." She blushes and looks away from me. I must have been staring.

"You look good." I admit, and her blush gets deeper. Everything in my body is saying fuck this, I just want to pull herbehind the dumpster and feel her legs wrapped around my neck so I can taste every drop of her.

"We ready?" Creek asks, standing next to me.

My lust is going to have to take a back seat.

I've got Creek, Tella, and Lash with me. I don't know exactly what I'm walking into, so I know I'm going to need backup.

"Yeah, let's go." I reply before I grab hold of Jayne's hand and we make our way in the direction of the address.

I'm surprised when I turn the corner and see that the address we were given is a pretty large structure. It looks like it used to be a small mall. Not bigger than a block, but still pretty big.

The five of us stay back and wait for someone else to walk up to the structure so we know where to go in. A Rolls Royce pulls up and a man gets out. He walks to the back of the mall and we know that's where we have to go in.

A million and one things can go wrong right now. I'm on edge thinking about it.

"We're going to need to split up," I say out loud as we’re making our way toward the door.

"Bullshit, I think we should stay together," Lash growls next to me.

"We are here to find those women and to see who is behind this shit. We're not going in guns blazing. This is a stealth mission. I'm going to need you to find out as much information as possible. You can't do that if all three of you are attached to my hip. We will separate, snoop around, and then we will all meet back by our bikes. We've got ninety minutes." I give Lash a look that lets him know I'm not going to argue with him, and he takes the hint.
