“It’s okay to be nervous—even afraid—but don’t let it cripple you, or keep you from doing it.”
“I know. It would just be a giant step in another direction, and I’ve never done anything like that before.”
“Sure you have.” When he just blinked at her, she said, “Your relationship with Jules and Evan was definitely a giant step in another direction. Which means—”
“I should go to culinary school and then open a restaurant.”
With a smile, Lauren leaned forward, and gave him one of her patented,It’s time for a lesson, look. “Have you ever heard of manifestation?”
“Sort of, but pretend like I haven’t.”
“Okay, well, it’s basically the act of attaining something, or attracting a desired outcome, through focused thought and intention. First, you decide what you want, believe you can have it because you deserve it, and that it’s possible. Then you close your eyes and visualize what it looks like in your mind.” She gave him an encouraging look. “So, why don’t you take a few moments and try to visualize your dream restaurant?”
Malcom closed his eyes and thought about the restaurant he’d passed on his way home after reading his ‘Fuck You’ letter. He began to picture how it would look inside, the colorof the table cloths, the food he would serve, the customers who would fill the space, and when he opened his eyes, he asked, “Is … that it?”
“No.” Her look turned to one of amusement. “I want you to do this every day. And then when you’re done, focus on what you’re grateful for and as you go into your day, sort of release that gratitude into the world, and trust in the Universe to figure out how to manifest your dream for you.”
He nodded, because what was he waiting for? He wasn’t getting any younger, and he didn’t need to make any more money.
It was time to start manifesting, hard.
When the session was done, she had him choose another crystal, this time with his eyes open, and he ended up picking a milky blue stone that looked almost iridescent in the light.
“That’s moonstone,” Lauren told him, before musing, “Interesting.”
“What do you mean ‘interesting’?”
“Moonstones are known to be stones of inner growth and strength, as well as an emotional stabilizer, reducing stress and providing calmness. It’s also known for enhancing intuition and promoting inspiration.”
Malcom nodded, although he didn’t think that was overly interesting.
“It’s also a stone of ‘new beginnings’. It’s a great stone for embarking on a new journey, or traveling to a different country, and is said to bring luck, success, and good fortune during your travels.”
Well, that part was pretty interesting, he had to admit, as he held it up and watched it shimmer in the light.
“It’s called moonstone because of it’s moon-like glow, which is called ‘adularescence’.” She gave him a warm smile. “It’s a good choice.”
Lauren then walked him to the door, surprising him with a hug. He didn’t know if she hugged all her clients at their last sessions, but he found himself filled with comfort at the contact, and when they parted, his eyes were prickling a little.
“Be well,” she told him, before adding, deadpan, “And try not to forget anything you’ve learned here.”
Chapter 82
Take this job and shove it
Malcom was in the middle of another incredibly boring Klein & Schmidt staff meeting (how many times did personal use of the copy machine have to be addressed, for fuck’s sake?) and started thinking about the next incredibly boring staff meeting, and the next.
He’d only been back to work for two weeks, and it hit him like a brick to the face that he didn’t want to do this anymore.
He didn’t want to spend even one more day at a job he didn’t like, doing work he didn’t like … so why was he?
Feeling a little nervous and adrenalized at the same time, when Mr. Klein asked if there was any other business to discuss before the meeting was brought to a close, Malcom said, “I have some business.”
“Yes? What is it?”
“I’d like to give my two weeks’ notice.”
Everyone turned to stare at him.
