Lauren obviously heard the question in his voice because she said, “The reason for this is to connect directly with the earth. It’s a way to ground yourself and to release negative energy from your body, and at the same time get some fresh air, and enjoy nature.”
“I can do that. Anything else?”
“That’s all I have for now. There will be more as you work on learning how to release what doesn’t serve you, because holding onto what doesn’t serve you in a positive way is toxic and gets in the way of living your best life and being happy.”
Malcom’s eyebrows drew together. “Like my father.”
“Yes, exactly like your father. He’s the source of most of your issues, and he needs to be released, pronto.”
“You make it sound almost easy.”
“It won’t be easy. I didn’t mean to give you that impression,” she told him. “It’s going to take some effort, but it can be done, if you put in the work.”
“I’ll put in the work.”
“That’s what I wanted to hear.” She leaned forward and gently pushed a large glass bowl full of colored rocks toward him. “Now, it’s time to pick your crystal.”
“Pick my crystal?”
Lauren nodded. “That’s right. I want you to stick your hands in there and really dig around, until you find the right one … but do it with your eyes closed.”
“Why do I have to do it with my eyes closed?”
“It’s how I have all my patients pick their first crystal. It’s so you pick the one you need, not the one you want.”
Closing his eyes, he did as he was instructed, moving his fingers through the polished stones, pretty sure this was bullshit, when he felt one that made him pause. Slowly, he pulled it out of the bowl and opened his eyes. It was an oblong, clear-looking stone, with what appeared to be black shards running through it.
“Good choice,” Lauren said approvingly. “It’s tourmalated quartz, also called rutilated quartz. It’s clear quartz—which is the workhorse of crystals—with black tourmalineinclusions. This is a healing stone for protection, grounding, and balance, and helps keep away negativity. Tourmaline itself is considered to be a lucky stone, so when it’s energy is amplified by clear quartz, it becomes kind of a lucky charm. Tourmaline is also known to have cleansing properties and help with mindfulness.”
He looked at it from all angles, really liking it. “All that in this little stone.”
“Feel free to find a metaphysical shop and buy a few more. Maybe even put one in the new space you’re going to create for yourself.”
“I will.”
She then told him that during this time it was vital for him to be kind to himself, both his body and mind. “If you feel tired, take a nap. If you feel like you need to eat cookies for dinner, do it. This is not a sprint, it’s a marathon, so we need to have a slow but steady pace.”
“Okay.”
Finished, Lauren got to her feet and as they walked to her door together, she put a hand on his shoulder. “At your next appointment, be prepared to start dealing with your father. The real work will begin then.”
Chapter 66
Homework for Malcom
Jules and Evan waited until they all got into the car after Malcom’s session to start asking questions.
“How did it go?” Jules asked.
“Did you lay on a couch like they do in the movies?” Evan wanted to know.
Malcom buckled his seatbelt before responding. “It was fine, and no, I didn’t lay on a couch. She did give me some homework, though.”
“What kind of homework?” Evan asked.
Pulling the crystal out of his pocket, then holding it up so they could both see it, Malcom said, “I have to get more of these.”
Evan blinked at it. “Rocks?”
