“It’s one of my favorite things about you,” Evan said with a chuckle. “Next time, though, I’ll pick out what you wear, okay?”
“Okay.”
Neither Jules, nor Malcom, had ever been to a gay club before, and while this outing was mainly for him—to get comfortable in a setting with other gay and bisexual people and experience being ‘open’ in a safe space—it was meant to broaden Jules’ horizons as well, since she was now technically a part of the pride family, too.
While Malcom was sent to get them a table, Evan and Jules went to get drinks. As they made their way to the bar, she noticed a few men giving Evan familiar nods, prompting her to ask, “I take it you know those men?”
“Yes,” he answered.
“In the Biblical sense?”
He paused. “A few of them.” Then, wondering if this was upsetting to her, he asked, “Are you … okay?”
“I’m not going to dwell on who came before,” she replied. “If that’s what you’re asking.”
“It was.”
“I assume the same goes for you?”
“It does. Especially since none of the men in your past can measure up to this,” he said, indicating himself.
She patted his cheek as if to say,Sure thing, honey. You keep believing that, which made him chuckle.
As they were ordering drinks, a woman came up and asked Jules to dance.
Surprised, because it was completely unexpected, Jules turned to Evan and whispered, “That woman just asked me to dance.”
Evan glanced over at the woman, a pretty brunette, and then told Jules, “It probably won’t be the last time a woman asks you to dance tonight.”
“But I’m not a lesbian.”
“I’m sure she knows.”
“You think so?”
“Yeah, so it’s not about that. Now, tell her you’d love to dance and go and shake your ass,” he encouraged.
Jules accepted the invitation, and followed the woman out onto the dance floor, moving through the crowd as Madonna’s “Into the Groove” played overhead. As they faced one another and began dancing, the other woman said, “I’m Jen.”
“I’m Jules.” Then, in the event Evan was wrong, she decided to add, “I’m straight, by the way.”
“I know. Sometimes I just like dancing with a beautiful woman.”
To Jules’ further surprise, Jen didn’t hold back with her dance moves, and even though it took Jules half the song to really let go and enjoy the other woman’s close proximity and not shy away from coming in contact with various body parts (as well as other people around them on the crowded dance floor), once Jules did, she started to really have fun. The last time she’d danced had been New Year’s Eve, and this was way better than that.
When the song ended, and Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” began, Jen asked, “One more?”
Jules nodded, and proceeded to lose herself in the song, the lights from the disco balls, and the sound of people singing the lyrics to the song. When it was over, she and Jen parted company, and Jules looked up toward the tables, waving when she spotted Evan and Malcom at one, looking down at her. Before she even reached the table, she got asked to dance again, but she politely declined because she needed to hydrate. The minute she sat at the table, she grabbed her gimlet and took a long sip, and after they all finished theirdrinks, they went down to the dance floor to dance together. At first, Malcom was a little stiff, but with Evan and Jules’ attention, Malcom began to loosen up and enjoy himself.
To Jules’ amusement, she got asked to dance several times, to the point where she was a sweaty mess.
One of the women Jules danced with asked her who she came to the club with. “We don’t get many straight women in here, and the ones we do are usually with their gay best friends,” the woman said, nodding her head in the direction of one of the couples Jules had spotted earlier. The man was wearing a silky, gold and orange patterned shirt (buttoned down to mid-chest), which was definitely retro, as he danced to Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” with a woman dressed in black jeans and a black tube top.
Jules pointed to Malcom and Evan on the dance floor. “I came with them.” Then, feeling the need to clarify things, she added, “And I’m with them, too.”
“With them, like … in a polyamory relationship?”
“Yes. They’re both bisexual, so we all ... engage.”
