“I will work as quickly as I can,” Lorrd said.“While I’m working, I expect you to stay at my side, little star.I intend to keep you safe, and I don’t want you out of my sight.”

Chapter7

Wren watchedas Lorrd affixed a translucent panel beneath the guest bedroom window. She had no idea how the security upgrades worked, but he’d told her that the newly installed panels on the windows and doors would help amplify the protective shield he’d erected around Emmy and Myles’ house. The panels would also trigger a secondary shield if they were shattered or breached, which he promised would keep all trespassers away.

As she continued watching him, she rubbed her right upper arm, touching the place where he’d recently given her an injection of nanobots, which he’d claimed would prevent illness and help her heal more quickly should she ever become injured.Thankfully, the shot hadn’t hurt, and he’d been so gentle and patient as he’d given it to her.

It was mind boggling to think that she would never get sick again or have to worry about diseases like cancer, neurological disorders, cardiovascular problems, and so on.According to Lorrd, the nanobots, which had been developed by a skilled Vaxxlian healer named Stax, could heal all ailments that tended to afflict humans and Vaxxlians.Only the gravest of injuries, like decapitation or being crushed to death—the two gruesome examples Lorrd had provided during his explanation—would be too much for the nanobots to handle.

She also recalled how Lorrd had explained that every Vaxxlian warrior was given a dose of nanobots solely intended for their human mates. He’d had one dose of nanobots to give to a female, and he’d given it to her.She was touched, but she also felt a tad guilty that more than once, she’d considered backing out of the VAMOB program.

Lorrd reached for a second panel, which he affixed to the bottom of the window, and she once again marveled at his massive size.

It felt strange having him in the room she’d been sleeping in.It was a tiny room with very little furniture, and she was seated on the bed because there was nowhere else to sit.She glanced down at the bed, musing that it was far too small to accommodate a huge Vaxxlian warrior.

But her face still became flushed, and she grew achy between her thighs again as she imagined Lorrd joining her in the too-small bed.

How soon would he claim her?

She couldn’t help but wonder.

She also couldn’t help but anticipate more of his kisses.

Her first kiss… her first kiss had been with an alien. Not just any alien, but a strikingly handsome alien male who’d promised to protect her.She believed him.She believed that he truly wanted to keep her safe.

But did his desire to keep her safe stem from his honor as a Vaxxlian warrior, or was he already starting to harbor feelings for her?

Well, he was attracted to her.At least she thought he was.

He’d kissed her soundly, and he’d made sexy growling noises in his throat during that toe-curling make out session.

Her breath hitched when she considered the hardness she’d felt beneath her bottom as she’d sat on his lap.Obviously, his manhood had gotten hard. She’d heard enough whispers about lovemaking to know what that meant—it signified his desire to claim her.She shifted in place as the achiness in her core deepened.

As Lorrd leaned over to check the translucent panel beneath the window, he shifted in such a way that she was suddenly provided with an enticing view of his muscular backside. He was still wearing pants, of course, but they were so form-fitting that they left little to the imagination.

Her breath hitched again when she realized they would likely soon see one another naked.

She glanced down at her body, wondering if he would like the way she looked. She wished she didn’t feel so self-conscious about her body, but modesty had been drilled into her from an early age, and she’d been made to feel bad about her curves many times.

As she’d matured, every time her dresses had become too constricting around her bosom, or too tight around her hips, her mother had fretted and taken those dresses away. She recalled being forced to stay up late sewing new gowns so she would have something more appropriate to wear to church or school the next day.

A shiver rushed through her as she recalled all the times she’d caught the Prophet staring at her in a way that made her uncomfortable, as well as all the times he’d stood far too close. No matter how modest her gowns, his gaze always tended to linger on her breasts.Even before his wife had passed away last year, he would gaze at her as though he were hungry. It had creeped Wren out, and while it wasn’t the main reason she’d left, it was still a contributing factor.

She tried to push away the unwanted thoughts of Harmony, reminding herself that she was no longer living under the Prophet’s authority. She’d run away. She was free.

But was she really free?

She cast another glance at Lorrd.

Was she about to trade one form of captivity for another?Vaxxlians mated for life. For life.

The walls suddenly felt like they were closing in, and breathing became difficult. She closed her eyes and dug her nails into her palms, just hard enough to make it hurt, a trick she’d learned that sometimes helped ground her in the present.Thankfully, the panic soon abated.

When she opened her eyes and saw Lorrd gazing down at her with a look of concern, she wasn’t sure what to think.Shame swept through her. What would he think if he learned she sometimes suffered moments of panic? She couldn’t help it.Sometimes, her thoughts began to race, worries began to compound, and before she realized it, she was having trouble breathing and even felt close to fainting.

She plastered a polite smile on her face, determined not to let him find out about her tendency to panic.Lorrd was still her best shot at survival. She didn’t want him to think she was defective in some way.She wasn’t certain what she would do if he suddenly decided he no longer wanted her.

“Are you all right?”Lorrd asked, walking closer.
