The concern in his eyes deepened. He came to stand next to the bed, though she suspected he refrained from sitting because he worried the bed might not hold him.

“I’m perfectly fine,” she forced out.She also forced another smile.“Just a bit tired. It’s been a long week.”

His expression softened further, and he kneeled in front of her, taking her hands in his.Unable to hold his penetrating gaze for another moment, she peered down at their joined hands, marveling at the length and width of his fingers.Everything about Lorrd was huge.

When the time came for them to consummate their mating union, would it be a challenge to accept his manhood? She swallowed hard and fought the urge to squirm in place.

Earlier, just before he’d kissed her, he had announced that he could detect the slickness between her thighs. As the achiness intensified, the wetness in her underwear seemed to increase. It was an experience that was completely new to her. She’d never felt this way before. She’d never felt so excited about a man’s touch.

“There is a large, comfortable bed on my Vaxxlian cruiser.Perhaps after we depart Earth, you can take a quick nap.”His expression abruptly turned serious.“But just a quick nap. There’s something we must take care of before we arrive on New Vaxx.”

“Oh?What’s that?”She was fairly certain she knew the answer. But she wanted to hear him say it.She wanted to know exactly what to expect.

“I would like for us to consummate our mating union before we set foot on New Vaxx,” he said, confirming her suspicions.“I want to properly claim you as my mate.”

Her mouth went dry.

This was her chance. If she was going to back out of the bride program, now was the time to say something. Before things went any further.

But even though she barely knew Lorrd—even though he’d struck her as a bit severe at first—she couldn’t imagine sending him away. She couldn’t imagine telling him that she didn’t want him.

Because the truth was, she did want him.Fervently so.Despite her nervousness over their impending wedding/mating night, she couldn’t fathom not going through with her plans to become his mate.

He stared at her intently, and she realized he was waiting for her response. He wanted to know if she would agree to mate with him on his Vaxxlian cruiser.Tonight.

“I-I understand your desire for us to consummate our mating union immediately,” she said in a breathless tone. Her heart wouldn’t stop racing, and she couldn’t stop flushing. And that ache between her thighs? It was so intense, it was almost becoming painful.

She needed him, just as he needed her.

A pleased look entered Lorrd’s glowing green eyes.

He lifted one of her hands to his lips, then he placed a soft, lingering kiss to the back of that hand. His unblinking eyes remained locked with hers, and she could not look away.

“Tonight, little star,” he said in a deep voice that rumbled through her, causing the pulsations in her core to thrum hotter.“Tonight, we will exchange mating vows, and then I will claim you as mine.”

Chapter8

Lorrd couldn’t believe it.

His fingers flew over the main navigation console on the bridge of theKerrla, but the launch sequence wouldn’t activate.

What thefluxxwas wrong with his ship?

He issued a verbal command, instructing the computer to perform a full diagnostic of the ship’s systems.A few moments later, the report appeared on a nearby screen.

He growled as he studied the results.

“Is something wrong?”Wren asked from the co-pilot’s seat.

“There’s a problem with the launch sequence,” he said, his voice tight, “as well as the environmental controls, the navigation system, and several other critical systems.”

He scowled at the array of screens and interface panels on the bridge, then quickly ran the diagnostic again to verify the results.Fluxx.He got the same result this time.

He took a deep breath and glanced at Wren. She appeared nervous, understandably so, but he didn’t like seeing her unsettled.Reaching for her hand, he laced his fingers through hers.He also endeavored to soften his expression, even as fury simmered inside him.

“I suspect theKerrla’ssystems have been infected with a virus,” he said, “though I’m having difficulty isolating the source of the interference.Whatever it is, it’s affecting multiple ship-wide systems.”

He aborted the launch sequence and powered down the ship.
