Shetrembled and took a deep breath before searching my face. “Sebastian?”
“Yes?”
“Willyou come back home?”
Istared into the eyes of my mate—the woman who was my entire world. “I’malready there.”
CHAPTER17
GIANNA
Isucked in a deep breath and released a giant exhale.Sebastianwas alive andZanewas dead.Sebastianwould recover—and he didn’t hate me.
Asmy friends left, takingZane’smalevolent band mates with them,Istared around the area behind the club. “Ican’t believe we didn’t draw a crowd out here.”
Sebastiangrunted. “Humanscan’t hear shit.Especiallyover the music.”Hestroked my cheek. “Besides, the whole thing was over quickly.Withina couple of songs.”
Iblinked a few times, trying to process the duration. “Seriously?Itseemed likeIwas stuck in that repulsive cage for hours.”Icast a scathing look at where the bone bag had imprisoned me.
Sebastianwinced when he moved to stand.
Itook his arm and helped him up. “I’lldrive us home.Leaveyour car here. We’lldeal with that later.”WithDiego’shelp to sealSebastian’swounds and shifter healing, he’d likely recover within a day or two.Heleaned on me and walked with a slight limp asIled us to my car. “Letme take care of you for a change,”Iinsisted asIhelped him into the passenger seat. “Youalways take such good care of me.”
“Wetake care of each other,”Sebastiansaid, fixing his deep brown eyes on me.
“Yes.”Inodded, swallowing the lump in my throat.Ialmost lost him tonight and would never take him for granted.
Duringthe car ride home,Istared straight ahead asIdrove, wrestling with everything that happened since that wretched vampire had given me that damn necklace.Iregretted ever putting it on.WhatIshould have done was return it toZane.MaybeIcould’ve avoided all this hellIputSebastianand my friends through.
OrmaybeZanewould have found another way to get to me.WhenIpictured that enchanted skeleton thatI’dlet into my club,Iscowled.Whoknew what lengths that vampire would have gone to get what he wanted?Itwas all about power, control—utter selfishness.Myfingers tightened on the steering wheel.
“Youokay, babe?”Sebastianplaced a hand on my thigh.
“Justthinking.”
“About?”Hegazed at me with concern.
“Regrets.”Isighed and ran a hand through my hair before gripping the wheel once more. “Icould’ve prevented what happened ifI’ddestroyed that cursed necklace.”Aftera heartbeat,Iadded, “Itake back everythingIsaid about needing space.Iwasn’t me.Imean,Iwas me, yes, but—not.Doesthat make sense?”
Henodded with a sympathetic look. “Iunderstand.”
Mymuscles tensed, andIadjusted in the driver’s seat. “Ifelt so much—rage.”Igrunted.Myface contorted asIremembered that aggravation, like an epic case ofPMS.Ishuddered. “I’msorry about everything,Sebastian.”
“Iknow and you already apologized.”Hesqueezed my thigh before pulling his hand away. “Whathappened wasn’t your fault.Don’tblame yourself for that damn vampire’s actions.”Hisvoice lowered with disgust.
“Okay,I’lltry not to,”Iagreed, gratitude rising within.Sebastianwas the opposite ofZane, considerate of others rather than selfish and power-hungry. “HowdidIluck out to get such a great guy?Someoneso understanding?”Istole a quick glance at him and smiled.
“I’mthe lucky one,” he countered. “Andbesides,Ishould shoulder some of the responsibility.”
Istopped at a red light and turned to him in surprise. “Why?”
Hestared forward. “Iknow it’s not easy being with a wolf. We’repossessive and territorial.Andyou are so independent. It’sone of the thingsIlove about you.SomethingInever want to change.”Hepaused. “I’lltry to be better at controlling my emotions.”
“No, don’t change.Ikind of like it when you’re possessive and take control.”Witha saucy grin,Iadded, “Especiallyin certain situations.”
Helaughed. “Noted.I’mguessingIknow exactly which ones.ButIdon’t thinkI’llbe up to performing tonight.”
“Nope, not tonight.”Ishook my head. “Oncewe get home,I’llmake sure you go right to bed to rest.Andthen you’ll let me dote on you.”
