He exhaled with a whoosh. “He thought you were our mate.”
I stared at him and then I laughed. “Good one.” I raised my index finger. “You look so serious, you almost had me there.”
“It’s true,” he insisted, fixing an earnest gaze on me. “That’s why I acted so weird.”
I assessed him. “Are you crazy?”
He rolled a shoulder and frowned. “It feels like it lately.”
“Oh, I should have known better than to think this,” she paused to motion between us, “was a good idea.”
“Itwasa great idea.” His eyes widened.
“I’m no one’s mate,” I protested. “That’s ridiculous.” I’d planned on cutting over to Nova’s apartment from their shared kitchen, but I needed to get some air. I headed to his front door. “Thanks for breakfast, but I'm out.”
He followed me. “I want to see you again, Gianna.”
“That isnotgoing to happen.”
“Why not? Didn't you enjoy yourself?”
I did. “Yeah, but that doesn't mean I'm going to get hitched up with you after you revealthatnonsense.”
His expression contorted as he appeared to struggle with something. “Don’t worry, I don’t believe that mate thing. It was just my wolf confused and acting all frisky. After I let him out to run, he settled down.”
I eyed him. “Are you sure?”
“Yes.” He glanced away. “I’m on board with what you want.”
“And what’s that?”
“A good time. Nothing serious.” He shrugged.
I opened the front door. “I’m not interested in getting involved with anyone, Sebastian. Bye.”
Once I closed it behind me, I exhaled. What did I get myself into? Crazy wolf.
After a few deep breaths, I walked over to Nova’s side and knocked.
She opened the door. “That was quick. Were you in the neighborhood?”
“Indeed.” I gave her a sheepish grin as I pointed my thumb to the right. “Next door.”
Her eyes widened. “Diego said you left with Sebastian. I didn’t think…” She blinked. “Really? You and him?”
I clucked my tongue, ignoring the question. “Is Diego here?”
“No, he went back to his room to get more sleep. I get up much earlier than a vampire.”
I nodded, grateful we hadn’t crossed paths.
Nova lifted her mug as she headed to her sofa. “Do you want some coffee?”
“No, I had plenty.” Sebastian ensured my appetite was satiated in more ways than one. “I need to tell you what happened last night.” I sat down beside her. “My mother showed up at the club.”
Nova’s eyes bugged out. “Yourmother?”
“Exactly.”
