Nova knew how epic this arrival was, so I didn’t have to explain.
“Why would she seek you out last night after all these years?”
“She said she wants to get to know me. What am I supposed to think?”
Nova blew out with a whoosh. “It’s—wow—I can’t even imagine. What did you say?”
“I said I’d think about it.”
“Wicked bats and flying monkeys. Are you going to tell your dad?”
Yikes. That was something I’d have to think about. “I don’t know. He’d definitely have some strong feelings on the matter.” After all, she’d walked out, leaving him to raise an infant on his own. “I’m probably better off not telling him. Yet.”
“Yeah, that’s a good idea,” Nova said with a nervous laugh. “Your dad can be scary when he’s pissed off.”
“Ugh, don’t I know it.” I dropped my head back. Despite his master level at intimidation, I’d learned to stand up to him at some point in my rebellious teenage years.
Glancing in the direction of Sebastian’s apartment, I said, “After my mother left the club, I freaked. All these crazy emotions raged through me, and I desperately wanted to shut them down. When Sebastian came to check on me, I practically demanded he take me home.” With a sheepish grin, I added, “Sorry if that adds any awkwardness to your living situation.”
She brushed it off with a wave. “Please, we’re all adults.” She touched her temples. “Oh man, was he super weird?”
More like incredible in bed. “He was fine.”
"Does this mean you and him?" Nova made a circular gesture to complete the sentence.
“No,” I dismissed. “It was just a one-night thing. I needed a distraction. He was there, willing and able. That’s all there is to it.”
“Got it.”
It was a great night despite my emotional turmoil with my mother. And breakfast with him this morning wasn’t that bad either. But then, there was that disturbing revelation this morning.
“It might have been a bad idea,” I added.
“Why?”
I pursed my lips. “He said his wolf thought I was his mate.”
“Ah, shit.” Nova crossed her legs. “Minor complication,” she added in a wry tone.
“He thinks it was a mix-up. His wolf was confused by my scent or something.”
“Ah, yes, that’s what he told me.”
“He told you?” I asked. “What else did he say?”
“That was pretty much it,” Nova replied.
“He’s so freakin’ strange.” I slapped my hands on my thighs. “And that’s why it will only be one-night. Itwon’tbe happening again."
Sebastian
Go back to her,my wolf insisted. She’s right next door.
What for? Gianna had made her feelings clear. She was not interested in any sort of relationship, or even hooking up, ever again.
Whatever connection I’d felt last night, I’d have to ignore until it went away. What was the point of pining after someone you could never have?
I’d have to find a way to tear her out of my head. I had to be strong enough to resist my wolf’s urges because this siren wouldn’t be singing any song to lure me back to her.
