“Why can't you take Bailey's car?”

“I want to surprise her and take her out to one of those movies you took me to,” I explain, “I can't ruin the surprise by asking to take her car and also her car isn't a truck so we can do the blankets and stuff.” That night meant so much to me. I hope he knows that.

“I thought that was our thing,” he says sarcastically, taking my hand from across the table. As we spent extra time putting up the bird houses all around camp, it is almost only us and the six kids in the hall right now.

“Aw, I'm sorry,” I say, “but seriously you don't care if I take her there, do you? It was just very cool.” I continue, straighten my posture slightly as I speak. I think I am whispering ever so slightly but it's hard to notice as thenerves hit me. I can't ruin tonight with Bailey. She means so much to me and now that I might be dating her brother makes it so much more complicated. Our friendship has pretty much returned to how it was, but it doesn't stop me from feeling guilty that I put any of us in that situation in the first place. I don’t realise I’m looking down until it feels as though my eyes are forced up at the sound of his voice.

Lucas laughs lightly. “Of course I don't care, sunshine. I was just messing with you.” I laugh too and the nerves that started to build up instantly leave as I look into his beautiful blue eyes again.

“So…” I trail off, smiling at him sweetly. “Can I borrow your car?”

“I'd give you my heart if you needed it, sunshine.” He laughs again and reaches into his pocket to get his keys, placing them on the table. “Bailey cannot drive my car. Don't crash it but if you do crash it, please tell me.”

“While I don't drive often at home, I'm not completely incapable. I did get my licence, didn't I?” I say.

“Did you pass the first time?” he asks but the look in his eye suggests he already knows.

“My theory, yes. You know I study for every test, but I got freaked out when I got in the car, but I passed my practical the second time. I might as well be a professional now.”

“This definitely feels like a bad idea.” He eyes the keys he placed beside me on the table and before he can, I snatch them and slip them into my pocket.

“Ha, too slow." I know I have a smug smile on my face.

We then continue to eat our lunches until the boys rush over to us, wondering what we have planned for the afternoon. It was football, or as they know it soccer and turns out I am so much better than Lucas at being in goal. We played boys vs girls, and we won.

“Where are you taking me?” Bailey says as I tightly hold onto her hand, pulling her toward the car park. The sun has set, and all the children are asleep so I can finally take her to the movie. I had to convince Charlie first who wasn't too sure because we keep spending our evenings out, whether it's as a group or just a few of us. I really had no clue what to do when I had first asked Charlie and hehad said we had to be there for when the children sleep but then I remembered when me and Lucas had gone to the drive-in. I loved that night, and I still love thinking of the memory.

“Can't you just let me give you a surprise?” I say to Bailey, as we start to walk towards Lucas’ car.

“It depends.”

“On what?”

“The surprise could be my death. I'd hate that,” she says nonchalantly, and I laugh instantly.

“Oh my god Bailey. That was far too dark. Also, you know I'd never do that to you.” She just shrugs, and I open up the door to Lucas’ car, letting go of her hand.

Bailey gasps, “Are we crashing Lucas’ car?”

“No,” I say simply, but she continues as if she hadn't heard me.

“Is this why you have been with him all this time? We now get to piss him off together. Was it all a ploy to allow my dreams to come true? " At this point we are both hysterically laughing, barely in control of our own breaths as we get into the car.

Our drive is anything but silent. Music blasts all around us by all sorts of artists. All year me and Bailey have had a shared playlist and now all the songs on it areplaying. They are so ridiculously random, ranging from new releases, old ones and a large range of artists. We screamed the entire way there and I loved it.

“Wait, are we watching a film?” she asks, as we approach the drive in. I nod at her, and she squeals, jumping out of the car. I pull out the blankets and food I had in the back, and she helps me place them out for us to be most comfortable. We dive into the back of Lucas’ truck, laying the food out in front of us. I went with Alec to get it but never told him what it was for when we both had a day off. I didn’t feel like going alone and he was nice company. He told me that his family are waiting for him back home and that he was going to miss me. I’m going to miss him too. I will miss all of them.

“What are we seeing then?” she asks, already tearing into the popcorn even though barely any other cars have arrived yet. We got both sweet and salty because she prefers salty, and I do sweet. She says that’s what makes us great friends because we both compliment and contrast each other.

“Hmm… it’s a surprise,” I reply. Soon later we see the opening image to 500 days of summer. We love this one. We have talked about it over and over again since we met. She grabs my hand hard as she sees it, wrapping her arms around me for the entire film.
