I’ll be leaving most things to you from now on. I’m feeling a bit tired, so I’m going to rest.

It was silent. Lita wondered if the surge from the necklace was draining to Mira, or if it was something else. She heard someone running toward them and turned to see Caden rushing inside.

“Asher, we have a bit of a situation that you need to deal with.” Caden hurried in, looking slightly stressed. “Caspian had to increase the barrier, and because he did, it’s messing with mindlinking, and the pack is freaking out because they don’t know what’s going on. Do we tell them about the barrier? You need to address the pack before there’s panic and, unfortunately, you can’t just mindlink them to do it.”

Asher growled. “Perfect … just perfect. What a mess.” He looked at Lita for a moment and his eyes softened. He didn’t want to leave things unsettled between them. He was feeling vulnerable, and Bo used the moment to push himself forward. He voiced something he never would have said. Of course, he wouldn’t ask her not to be a healer.

“We can talk later. You better go and calm down the pack.”

“We’ll be having a ceremony shortly. Why don’t you go and get ready for it? It’s semi-formal, and I know Kristen has a wardrobe for you to go through.”

“She wants to play dress-up with me.”

Asher smiled as he stared into Lita’s eyes. She didn’t seem angry with him and was going to give him a chance to explain. He stepped up to her, wanting to tell her that what he said wasn’t him, but Bo. “Lita—”

“WHY CAN’T I MINDLINK?!” someone yelled in the distance, their voice full of panic.

Lita kissed the corner of his jawline and motioned him with her eyes to go.

“I’m sorry. I love you.” He swiftly turned and left with Caden. They needed to quickly deliver messages to every shifter in the pack. Panic was not something he wanted to deal with.

Lita looked over the patients once more before she headed back to the packhouse. She had only taken a few steps when she felt her body humming. Something was calling to her, similar to what she’d heard before, near the meadow. She turned and listened to the soft singing. The song blew in on the breeze, embracing her. Her chest felt warm, and her fingers began to tingle. Then, suddenly, it stopped. Everything became quiet. It was like a window had been shut. Whatever it was, it was gone.

“I wonder what that was?” she mumbled to herself as she walked back to the pack house. As soon as she stepped inside, Kristen bounded up to her.

“Let’s go! We need to pick you out a cute dress. Let’s coordinate to show that we’re besties!”

Lita smiled, not sure how to react at being called someone’s bestie. It was a first for her.

She decided to see Kristen’s reaction to the pack using silver. “I was shocked to find out that Black Ice conditions their pack with silver and wolfsbane.” Lita looked at Kristen as she tried on a flowered sundress. It had a halter top and came just above her knees. This was the dress. It was perfect.

“There was a major fight. Asher lost his parents, and we lost several members of our pack, including my own parents. Asher became the new alpha, and it was his goal to make the pack tougher. Training was increased, and he began working on building up the warriors’ tolerance. We were a tough pack before, but now we’re the toughest around.” Kristen grabbed a matching dress and put it on. “Look at us!” She grinned as they both looked in the mirror. “Come on, I have shoes for us downstairs!”

Kristen’s energy was warm and friendly. She was beautiful and genuine, the type of person Lita had always envisioned herself being friends with. She was the icing on the cake of being in the Black Ice Pack. Despite the pack’s sad past, no one seemed to bedepressed. They were all proud of their strength. Asher, even at a young age, did a great job leading his pack. She felt very proud and honored to be his mate.

As Lita was dragged down the steps, she noticed Caspian standing near the bottom. “Caspian, I heard … I heard singing earlier, and then it disappeared.” She hoped it was a fairy thing and that she wasn’t going crazy.

“Yeah, I heard them. Bunch of rude, inconsiderate nuisances. They couldn’t come to see you, so they were calling to you. That’s why I had to increase the barrier. I wanted to make sure their sound was also blocked out, too. I don’t need them waking you up right now,” Caspian grumbled as he talked about the pests.

“I’m glad I wasn’t hearing things.” Lita giggled as she winked at Kristen.

“I’m afraid I don’t know much about fairies. I always thought they were weak and didn’t have any real strength.”

Caspian scoffed loudly. “This is why fairies stay secretive. There’s always that misconception about them. Wolves run in a pack, but for the most part, fairies are fairly isolated. They keep to themselves and do their own thing. There are many different wolf packs, but only one fairy kingdom where all fairies are welcome, provided they aren’t malicious. And when it comes to strength, a single guardian could take out a werewolf pack easily. They can definitely overtake a single alpha one-on-one. Werewolves are strong only because of the numbers in their pack. If fairies banded together and united in a fight, it wouldn’t be good. All the werewolf packs would have to unite to be able to fight on par. But they think fairies are weak … good, let them.”

“Sorry … I never knew. I don’t know much, but now that our luna is part fairy, I’m ready to learn.” Kristen didn’t know anything about fairies, but did anyone? In her eyes, this was pretty strategic. They knew about everyone else, but no one knew anything about them.

“So, can all fairies make a barrier, or is it something only you can do?” Lita was curious about fairies and their abilities. So far, she hadn’t discovered hers, but she guessed it was because she hadn’t awakened.

“It isn’t exclusive to me, but only a few fairies can make barriers. I can make different barriers. It depends on the type, how large I need to make them, and how long they need to stay up. That’s a fairy secret, though.” Caspian looked up at Kristen, who made the sign for locked lips, throwing away the key.

“I can smell the pig roasting, and it’s making my mouth water. Let’s see if we can steal a few snacks from the buffet spread they have out back.” Caspian looked hopefully at the two girls for some partners in crime. He would find no objection from them. They were all for it.

Kristen giggled and headed toward the door. “Do we really need to sneak, though? I mean, who’s going to tell the luna no?”

Chapter 31

As they walked to the back of the house, they saw tables upon tables set up, all covered with food. Behind that was a large pavilion with tables and chairs to accommodate the whole pack.In the middle of it all were two large roasters, smoking whole pigs. The pavilion was decorated with lily flowers and had small strands of lights running throughout the inside edges. No one had ever thrown this large of a party for Lita, but this party wasn’t just for her. It was a party in celebration of the pack finding their luna, and their alpha finding his mate. Still, it felt welcoming to see all the efforts being made.
