She laughs. “Unfortunately, she never made it. Oh, Henley!” she calls out loudly.

Henley shuffles out from behind the bar with her hands and feet tied, and Grayson swears.

Tear tracks line her face, but with the gag, she can’t say anything.

“Untie her feet and remove the gag,” she orders me.

I rush over and do what she says. “Where’s Mitch?” I whisper.

“Downstairs in a closet. She injected him with something,” she whispers back.

“Stop talking and get back over here!” she yells.

Gripping Henley’s tied hands, I keep her behind me and move back to Grayson’s side.

“Henley, step forward,” she instructs her.

“Why don’t you—"

The gun goes off and a splinter of wood flies in the air near my feet. Henley’s hand squeezes mine tightly.

“If she doesn’t step forward, I’ll kill you, then her. Do it now,” she orders.

I lock my knees. Where the hell is our friend in the sky? “I wish I had a friend right now,” I yell.

She gives me a suspicious look and turns the gun on Grayson. “Fine, I’ll shoot him first.”

“Wait!” Henley shouts behind me. “I’m coming.” She jerks her hands from mine and steps around me.

Both Grayson and I step forward.

Kathleen levels the gun on Henley. “I’m an excellent shot, you know. A Texas girl through and through. My daddy taught me to defend myself at an early age.” A tinkling laugh fills the air. “Unfortunately, Henley, you’ve got to go. From the moment you showed up in Miami, you’ve done nothing but ruin every single one of my plans. Well, except the one to kill Grayson.” With the gun raised, she walks toward Henley. “I’m going to enjoy seeing you die.”

I bend my knees, preparing to jump when she gets closer, but a second later, blood and matter explodes from the front of her head and Kathleen crumples to the ground.

I cautiously walk over and peer down at the hole in the back of her head. We never even heard a sound.

I blow out a huge breath. Our friend finally came to the party. Better late than never, I guess. I step forward to hug Henley, and something stings my bicep.

“Get down!” Grayson yells, diving toward Henley and me. Another bullet hits right where he was standing a second ago.

Staying low, we scoot across the deck into the covered area. Grayson pulls Henley into his arms while I scramble to get to my phone.

Putting it up to my ear, I hear Thiago yelling orders and directing men to a nearby roof. I guess he’s already realized what’s happening.

“Thiago!” I yell, trying to get his attention.

“Tell me everyone is alive,” he snarls into the phone.

“Henley, Grayson, and I are alive, Kathleen is dead, and we’re not sure about Mitch,” I respond quietly. “I’m guessing the friend on the roof wasn’t ours?”

“Shots came from the dock roof, not the building where one of our security team was supposed to be,” he replies in a hard voice. “You can come out now. They’re gone. I’ll be there in a minute.” He hangs up.

I relay everything to Grayson and Henley.

She raises a hand to my arm. “You’re bleeding. Is there a first aid kit?”

Grayson nods absentmindedly. “I’ll get it.”
