“It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have assumed that you would want to do anything with me,” she said. “Listen, we’ll be shorthanded for a few days until we can get a replacement. That’s all I wanted you to know.” She stood, ready to leave them, but Butch gripped her arm.

“Don’t go. Please. I’m embarrassed by my actions, and had I known you wrote the note, I would have much rather spent the evening with you.”

“You don’t have to say that, Butch.”

For the first time, Ambry realized just how lovely Marjorie was. Yes, she was older than most of the nurses, but not old. She had shoulder-length brown hair, bright, clear blue eyes, perfect skin with no makeup at all, and her body was amazing beneath all the scrubs and lab coats. She was really lovely.

“I mean it. I need to get some air. Will you walk with me?”

“Are you sure?” she asked, staring at him.

“Positive.”

The team watched as the two walked away, Pierre grinning at his teammate.

“Wow,” smirked Tucker. “Old Butch might have just met his match.”

“Was it my imagination or did she look hot tonight?” asked Winslow.

“She looked very pretty,” smiled Ambry. “I never noticed how pretty she was before now. I hate that Judy is going to face disciplinary action, but this is not the first incident for her. She nearly ruined what could be the start of at least one, if not two, great relationships.”

“Somebody has been ignoring her behavior for a long time,” said Pierre. “But in fairness, had she been a man, they would have ignored it all the way.”

“True,” frowned Ambry. “Well, it’s been a long day for all of us. I’m headed to my room.”

“I’ll walk with you,” said Pierre, taking her hand. “Maybe in the morning we’ll have some good news from back home about those churches and the nun. And if we’re really fortunate, we’ll have some good news about those kids.”

CHAPTER TWELVE

Ambry cuddled close to Pierre, her hand on his bare chest. They’d made love again, as quietly as they could, squeezed into the tiny bunk.

“I can’t wait until we’re somewhere that has a large bed,” he grinned.

“Me too,” she laughed. “My contract is up soon. What about you?”

“Same,” he nodded. “I was hoping we could go home together.”

“Same,” she smiled. “I just want to be in a normal hospital and clinic helping my family and team.”

“Well, I’m not sure you can classify our clinic and hospital as normal.” He chuckled, pulling her tighter. “You know, I remember Dad telling me that nothing was as it seems here. There was voodoo and drugs, crime and vandalism, nothing could be taken at face value, and I’m finding the same.”

“What do you mean?”

“This man, everyone told me was at the heart of the issues. I don’t think he is. He’s been open, helpful, friendly, and I believe him. I think he’s trying to find these kids, just like us. Yet when we spoke to one of the churches, one not on my list, I might add, that we could find today, they all said he was evil.”

“It’s not like the church hasn’t been wrong before,” said Ambry. “Maybe they’re angry with him about something.”

“Or maybe someone is telling them to be angry with him. I don’t know, babe. All I know is that this guy doesn’t make me think anything but good thoughts about him. He’s given us too much information for me to think otherwise.”

“Well, Dad would say, trust your gut. It’s rarely wrong.” Pierre nodded, kissing the top of her head again. He rolled to his side, facing her. One hand cupped her jaw, the other cupped her ass. “Do you know how often I dreamed of this?”

“Almost as much as me,” she grinned. He laughed, shaking his head.

“You surprised me, Ambry. I knew how I felt about you, but I just didn’t allow myself to believe that you felt the same.”

“Why? I was always nice to you. Always said hello, ran to you when you were home. When I was younger, I wanted you to pick me up and hold me. I still want that, but for entirely different reasons now,” she chuckled. “I’ve always had feelings for you, Pierre. I kept my virginity for you, hoping that you would feel the same one day.”

“I know,” he said, kissing her sweetly. “I can’t believe you did that for me. Were you serious about possibly wanting children with me?”
