Alyssa’s wolf bared her teeth.
“Well, you’ve reached her wolf,” Maddox said.
“Maddox, go patrol,” Rafe ordered. “Make sure we haven’t been spotted.”
“Listen to Tiernan, angel. He won’t steer you wrong,” Maddox said before shifting and disappearing into the brush.
Alyssa’s wolf whined when Maddox left.
“That was Alyssa. I’m sure of it,” Tiernan said. “Her fear spiked when he left.”
“I should have gone. She fears me.”
“No, I think she’s afraid Maddox won’t return. She’s not running from us, Rafe, but toward her father. Her wolf wants to keep him from ever harming her or Alyssa again.”
Maddox howled in the distance. An alert. Seconds later, gunfire erupted on the other side of camp, near the main gate. Not a few warning shots either. It sounded like the humans were determined to throw every bit of firepower they had at one white wolf.
“Stay with her, Tiernan.” Rafe shifted and raced to find Maddox.
More fear crossed the bond. Alyssa’s wolf cared about Rafe, and one-by-one she was watching her males leave her, going toward danger. Tiernan suspected that was her greatest fear, and while he hated to play upon her fear, he needed to do whatever it took to get her to safety.
“That’s a lot of gunfire, Alyssa. Rafe and Maddox will take their chances against the WSSO. Fight to the death to keep them away from you. But if you convince your wolf to give up this idea of revenge, we can leave right now. Escape. All of us. It’s your choice. Do we stay and fight, or leave?”
Fear changed to raw determination as Alyssa’s wolf shot past Tiernan on the same path Rafe had taken. Tiernan hadn’t expected that. He’d forgot who he was dealing with. Alyssa had her fears, but she didn’t let them conquer her.
He shifted and caught up to Alyssa’s wolf. His wolf loved running alongside her, despite the fact that they were heading right into the heart of the shooting.

ALYSSA
There wasno way in hell Alyssa was going to let the WSSO touch Rafe and Maddox again. Tiernan was right. She had to show her wolf who was in charge.
We’re backing them up,she said to her wolf.
Revenge.
Pack, Alyssa returned, trying to think like a wolf. Basic emotions. Pack and mates first.
Alyssa felt her wolf back down slightly.
Mates. Must defend, she added. Images of the pain from being caged pummeled Alyssa.
Never again, Alyssa promised. Protection worked two ways, she realized.
Her wolf backed down, waiting for Alyssa to tell her what to do.
Alyssa’s wolf shot past Tiernan, racing in Rafe and Maddox’s direction. She scented the ground, bushes, and air until she found their scents. Both scents, one earthy but richer than the soil around her, and the other like a waterfall misting the air, empowered her to push her wolf hard. Legs stretched as she raced through the trees at a speed she never imagined she’d experience. The wind sifted through her fur as her paws struck the ground, perfect placement avoiding tree roots and jumping over felled branches. After so many years, Alyssa began to feel one with nature and her wolf.
The trail led her around the gunfire, which came from the entrance to the compound. A flash of silver fur caught Alyssa’s attention. Despite his longer stride, Tiernan’s wolf matched her pace, running alongside her. Not in front as an alpha, or behind as a guard, but beside her. Equal.
She felt his pride and concern across the bond and wished she could tell him everything she was thinking, but he was right. They had to find Rafe and Maddox and escape. Later, she’d figure out how to shift.
The path they followed led them straight to a wall of DSA agents and wolves descending on the compound. That explained the excessive amount of gunfire. The mercenaries weren’t shooting at Rafe and Maddox, but at the DSA and an army of wolves. And the DSA was shooting back.
Over a dozen white wolves charged the main gate alongside DSA agents in full military gear. Alyssa didn’t see Rafe or Maddox anywhere. Were they inside the compound? Hurt somewhere outside? Dead?
Before she let her panic overwhelm her, she raced through the gate, leaping on a mercenary attempting to escape. She wasn’t going to let even one bastard get past her, especially when she didn’t know where Rafe and Maddox were.
