Gunfire flew overhead. A wolf tackled her to the ground. One that licked her snout. She forced her way out from beneath him. Maddox! She nuzzled his neck, so thrilled to see him. She couldn’t wait to shift and show him just how much.
Suddenly, Maddox pivoted, snarled, and warned another wolf away. Another white wolf who shifted to human form.
“I see you found your mate, Maddox,” Drake said as five other white wolves spread out, covering the immediate area, waiting for orders. “Thank you.”
Chapter Twenty-Five
MADDOX
“Thank you,” Drake said, with that infuriating grin of his.
What the fuck was he up to?
“Why are you thanking me for finding my mate?” Maddox asked as soon as he shifted. He remained between Alyssa’s wolf and Drake, not that he had a chance of outmaneuvering both an alpha and five guards. If they wanted to reach her, they would, right through Maddox if necessary.
“Because she’s a member of our pack now. I didn’t want to lose her. Or you, of course.”
“Of course,” Maddox repeated, his sarcasm clear as day. He wasn’t falling for Drake’s bullshit. He needed to figure out what Drake—hisformeralpha—was up to. That, and stall until Rafe and Tiernan made their way to him and Alyssa. Three against six were crappy odds, but a hell of a lot better than six against one.
“We’re done here. Agent Gallagher is rounding up the humans and releasing the caged shifters. It’s time to return home,” Drake said as the five other white wolves surrounded Maddox and Alyssa.
“I said I’d return, and I will, but she’s not coming with us. She’s not pack.”
“She’s your mate. That makes her pack, even without a loyalty oath to me. And as I said before, the other two males may come as well. I’m being generous here, cousin. Be grateful and fall in line.”
“No,” Maddox said. “You can’t have her.”
Drake stepped forward, even as several of his guards growled at Maddox. “That wasn’t a request, cousin.”
“We’re not on Novak land, Drake. You can take me, but you can’t touch her.”
“And who will stop me?”
“We will,” Rafe said behind the circle of white wolves. He and Tiernan stood ready to fight. “Alyssa is part of my pack,” Rafe added. “As is Maddox.”
Drake raised an eyebrow and laughed. “And how do you figure that, Anderson? From what I hear, you gave up your birthright, which is just as well, because even your alpha knows you aren’t strong enough to lead his pack.”
“Want to try me, Novak?” Rafe said, arms folded across his chest, his grin and demeanor dripping with confidence.
Drake barely acknowledged him. “The DSA will support me in this. Right, Gallagher?” he called over to the agent who was loading several WSSO terrorists into a government van.
Gallagher approached the shifters, quickly noting the obvious division. “Where’s Monroe? Agent Monroe, I mean.”
Drake pointed to Alyssa’s wolf behind him. “A shifter, as I told you.”
“You were right, Novak. I didn’t believe it, but you were right. Monroe, where did your parents go?”
“She won’t answer you,” Maddox said.
“Tell her to shift.”
“Fuck you, Gallagher. Even if she shifted now, she wouldn’t answer you. You’ve used her at every turn. You want her parents, fucking find them yourself.”
“I could charge her as an accessory.”
“To what? She was a prisoner here. They experimented on her like they did dozens of other shifters.”
“Prove it.”
