I only made it a dozen steps before she called out to me.
“Seriously… you’re gonna slink off,” she taunted.
It was hard to believe, but I’d missed that cheeky tone of hers. Her words stopped me in my tracks. I didn’t turn around but called out my own reply. “I don’t slink. And for the record, I’m trying to be a gentleman here,” I answered truthfully.
“Since when were you worried about that?” she teased.
She was playing with fire. This whole chivalry gig was new to me. I wasn’t sure how strong I could be if she tempted me more.
I finally turned, locking eyes with her as I gave my answer. “Since my promise to your brother.”
“That didn’t stop you from taking me with you tonight,” she countered, pointing out the obvious.
“Exactly. That’s why I’m trying hard not to compromise you any more than I already have.”
While I spoke, Sophie had started taking slow steps forward, closing the distance between us until we were close enough that I could have reached out to pull her against me if I’d wanted to. And fuck, I wanted to.
I was grateful for the bright moonlight. It let me see the humor dancing in her eyes as she teased me. “Maybe I don’t mind being compromised.”
My heart raced as I interpreted her flirty comment.
“Sophie…”
“Nick…”
The second her hand reached out and lightly touched my chest through my black T-shirt it was as if I’d heard the starting bell of a race. All self-discipline flew out the window as I pulled her against me, bending to capture her lips in a smoldering kiss.
Any doubts that I’d misinterpreted her flirting flew out of my mind as she wrapped her arms around my neck, pulling us closer together as our bodies melted into each other. She let her tongue duel with mine in a dirty dance I never wanted to end. Christ, everything about this felt perfect.
When I finally came up for air, we were both breathing heavy. As we rested our foreheads against each other, I moved my hand lower from her waist to her ass, squeezing where I’d had the pleasure of spanking her a few nights before. What I’d give to have her back over my knee, wiggling that adorable ass of hers as I stoked our passion higher and higher.
Fuck it.
Leaning lower, I threw my shoulder against her stomach, lifting her over my shoulder in a perfect fireman’s hold.
“Nick!” she giggled. With relief, I recognized that unlike the first night I’d carried her like this, this time she was having fun.
“Quiet there, kitten. We wouldn’t want to wake up Margaret now, would we?” I answered as I took long strides, heading down the path to the beach house.
“But… where are you going? Isn’t my room closer?” she offered from over my shoulder.
“Exactly. We need to head down to the beach house where we can be nice and loud. I plan on making you scream—over and over.”
CHAPTER17
Sophie
I really hoped I knew what the hell I was doing. As I bounced upside down on Nick’s shoulder, the blood was rushing to my face. More important, it was rushing to my girly parts, thanks to Nick’s raunchy promise minutes before.
As dangerous as the mission into the Bishop estate had been, something deep inside me knew that what I was about to do was actually more reckless. As magnetic as the pull was to Nick, there couldn’t be anything long term between us. That meant I needed to guard my heart.
I’ve never been a one-night-stand kind of girl, but just like I’d followed my gut when making my decision to help Nick, I was trusting my instincts now to know that I would regret it forever if I didn’t let whatever this attraction I felt to Nick play out before I left him for good.
We weren’t more than a few steps into the still dark beach house before Nick deposited my butt onto the kitchen island, my legs dangling over the edge. With a growl, he lunged forward to steal another kiss.
Unlike in the driveway, this time he took his time, cupping my face with his hands, holding me intimately while his tongue explored. My pulse raced as he lowered one hand to my breast, massaging me through the all-black outfit I’d worn on the mission.
“You have too many clothes on,” he accused, pulling out of our embrace long enough to yank my T-shirt over my head before dropping it to the kitchen floor.
