But I swear for maybe a fraction of a second, he glanced at my lips. If I’d blinked I would have missed it.

“Titan, enough,” someone said.

I turned my head to see Bennett standing on the other side of the counter with his arms folded across his chest. I’d never been so relieved to see him.

Titan grunted. It looked like he wanted to punch the vault door above my head.

Instead he leaned forward, his lips hovering by my ear. “Watch your back, doll. The truth has a funny way of showing up when you least expect it and knocking you on your ass. And I’ll be the one laughing.”

What the fuck was he talking about? I liked his friends. I wasn’t lying.

Titan tapped the vault door above my head instead of hitting it, and then stepped back.

I brushed past him and grabbed the grocery bags off the counter. “Hey,” I said to Bennett, trying to hide the tremor in my voice. “I brought you guys dinner. Otto showed me the grill on the roof last night. And I thought we could have a cookout…”

Bennett grabbed the bags from my hands. “Come with me, Zoey.” He didn’t say another word as he walked me down a hallway and opened the second door on the left.

I hadn’t expected Titan to accost me. But I had expected it to be easy to get one of them to show me the entrance to the roof. I walked up the stairs.

The rest of the guys were already up here.

Otto stood up when he saw me. “Zoey, are you okay?”

I nodded.

He stepped forward, but Bennett blocked his path. “She brought us dinner. If the three of you could start preparing it, I need a moment alone with Zoey.” He handed them the bags.

“Thanks for bringing dinner, Zoey,” Huxley said as he looked into one of the bags. “We were just about to order takeout and this looks so much better. And I have something for you later too.” He winked at me and walked over to the grill. Ace and Otto followed him.

All I wanted to do was run after them. But Bennett but his hand on my lower back, guiding me toward where they had been sitting.

God, not another moment alone with someone who I was pretty sure hated me. Although, I’d take talking to Bennett any day over talking to Titan.

Bennett gestured for me to take a seat. I sat down and was surprised when he sat down right next to me. So close that our thighs were practically touching.

“What did Titan say to you?” he asked.

“Nothing of any value.”

Bennett smiled. “He’ll come around.”

“Will he?”

“I’m sure of it.”

I stared at him. “And what about you?”

“What about me?”

“Will you…come around to me?”

“I think we somehow got off on the wrong page, Zoey.”

I smiled. “Not really. The friend zone isn’t such a bad place to start out.”

“That’s actually exactly what I’m talking about. I was speaking to Emma yesterday and…”

“Oh. You don’t have to say anything else. I know this is weird. Since the two of you were dating. We can stay friends, Bennett. If that’s what you want. I understand.”
