“Hello?”
“Do you really think I’m impossible?” he asks playfully. “I won’t be able to sleep until I know the truth.”
I pull my robe tightly around me and lie back on my bed.
“Honestly? You have your moments.”
He laughs. “All right, fair enough.”
“Whoa. Did you just admit that you’re less than perfect? I don’t even know what to think about this.”
“Shhh … don’t tell anyone,” he begs. “I have a reputation to protect.”
I laugh. “Of course you do.”
“Anyway, I want to hear more about your promotion,” he says. “I can’t believe you didn’t say anything sooner.”
Ha. How was I supposed to bring that up when everyone was trying to console Erica in her darkest hour?
I tell him about the director of sales position and how I’m usually very uncomfortable when it comes to changes. Being able to share my news with someone makes it feel real. It reminds me that he was the first person I thought about telling when Spencer offered me the position.
“What’s so scary about this job?” he asks. “You’ve been working for the company for a long time, so you know how it runs, right?
I pull the covers back and crawl under them.
“I do—but I guess the unknown makes me nervous.”
“Sometimes the unknown is empowering and energizing,” he declares. “Why not put your focus on all the good things this new position will provide you with?”
“I want to.” I pause. “The funny thing is that I keep thinking about riding those Jet Skis in the islands.”
“Great idea. Think back to how you felt when you were on the waves. You were out there taking risks and still having fun.”
I glance at the time on my phone. It’s already after one o’clock.
“Oh, wow, it’s late,” I say. “I’m sorry I’ve kept you on the phone so long.”
“I’m not.”
I pull the comforter up under my chin. “I should probably get some sleep.”
“Yeah, me too,” he says unconvincingly. “I guess a little bit of extra beauty rest won’t hurt. Not that I need it.”
I snort. “You really should think a little higher of yourself.”
“Good point. I’ll work on it.” He pauses for a few seconds. “Before you go I need to ask you a question.”
I sit up straight as my heart starts to beat faster. “Okay, should I be worried?”
“Not at all. There’s this big wedding coming up, and I was wondering if you’d save me a dance or two.”
A wide grin spreads across my face.
“I think that could be arranged.”
“I was hoping you’d say that. I think I’ve almost won you over. I told you it could happen.”
I giggle. “Yes, you’re very sure of yourself.”
