“Yes, we will,” Shannon says confidently. “Steven isn’t here anymore. Our new director will lead this team in a much needed positive direction.”

I let out a puff of air. Shannon is annoying most days, but Shannon on a power trip takes the cake.

As soon as she walks away, Parker leans into me.

“You need to get that job,” she insists.

I give her a curious look.

“Me? What about you?”

She gives me a wicked smile. “I can’t get it. It would be favoritism or a conflict of interest.”

“Why, because you’re Mr. Brady’s favorite?” I whisper.

Her cheeks turn red. “Obviously.”

Wow. She’s definitely smitten.

“Good morning, everyone,” a familiar booming voice says. Spencer Brady gives a wave, and Parker practically gets stars in her eyes. “I know it’s been a little hectic around here, but I want to sit down with everyone over the next few days and get a feel for where you are.”

“That sounds excellent, Mr. Brady,” Shannon speaks up. “I already have a few ideas I’d like to share with you. I know we can all learn a lot from your experience and expertise.”

Blech. She’s so obvious. I’m sure Spencer Brady has seen her type on many occasions. There’s no way he’ll fall for her crap. At least I hope not.

“In my experience, I find that I learn more from the sales teams than they from me,” Spencer replies.

Boom. Mic drop. So far, so good.

Shannon’s face falls slightly before she quickly changes her tone and agrees with him.

“Ms. Parker, are you available to chat?” Spencer asks.

I look at Parker. I think she stopped breathing for a few seconds.Breathe, Parker.

“Uh. Sure. I’m ready if you are,” she says in a high pitched tone.

I try to hide my smile as she follows him to Steven’s old office. I’m actually not worried. If there’s one thing I know about Parker, she’s resilient and quick on her feet. She’ll pull herself together and be her usual charming self.

When I finally check my phone, I have a few messages from Erica waiting for me.

Naturally. She might be the best maid of honor in all of history.

Big day countdown. Two months and one week.

Dress fitting next Saturday. Get plenty of sleep. Watch your carbs.

I groan. Now this could be a deal breaker for the whole bridesmaid job. I love my carbs.

As promised, she sent a lengthy email with all the planning details. Rachel was right about her having everything covered. Maybe this won’t be as much work as I initially expected with her in the driver’s seat. Two months doesn’t seem that long. Of course, Caroline and Andy have been engaged for a while, and I’m pretty sure her mother started planning her daughter’s wedding the day she was born.

I’ll be there,I reply.

After what seems like a while, Parker returns to her desk. She’s grinning from ear to ear.

“All good?” I ask.

She nods. “So good.”
