The image of Caroline’s maid of honor and Andy’s best man causing a huge wedding day disaster flashes through my mind.
“No way. I’m not going to be the one to blow things up and ruin Caroline’s wedding.”
She shakes her head. “Well, maybe you could observe things the next time you’re all together. You’re the outsider, so you’ll pick up on things before the others will.”
I groan. “I don’t want to get caught up in it. I just want to be a dutiful bridesmaid to my friend.”
Although, I really do like Erica. I also think she’s a genuinely good person—and she certainly doesn’t deserve to be treated like this by a friend or her boyfriend. Still—it’s not my place.
“Okay. How was the party otherwise? Were there any eligible, single men for you to fall in love with?”
I knew this question was coming. Parker’s brain will always go back to my personal life. That’s what friends are for, right?
“Single? Yes. Eligible—I’m not sure.”
She gives me a wicked smile.
“Ah, so is that a yes?”
I lift my shoulders. “Not exactly. There were three of them, and one is already spoken for by another bridesmaid who doesn’t like me, I might add.”
“The bridesmaid doesn’t like you?” she asks. “Why do you say that?”
“Oh, trust me—I can tell when someone doesn’t like me,” I say emphatically. “It started with a few snarky texts, and she went out of her way to let me know I didn’t belong in their little circle. I think she’s hoping I’ll bow out and skip the whole thing.”
“So you think she’s mad you’re a bridesmaid?” Parker asks.
“Yes.”
“She’s probably threatened because you have a past with Caroline and her fiancé and she’s not a part of it. Luckily, it’s not her decision. It’s Caroline’s wedding.”
“It must be nice to have so much free time that you can spend your morning chatting,” a voice interrupts.
Parker and I look over to see Shannon in her power suit. She has her hands on her hips, and I suddenly feel like I’m getting reprimanded by one of my college professors.
Parker rolls her eyes.
“Oh, Shannon, it really isn’t any of your concern how we spend our mornings,” I say politely. “By the way, you look really nice today.”
Parker presses her lips together to hold in a giggle.
“Why am I not surprised that you two wouldn’t take this seriously?” she retorts. “With Steven gone, we’re basically on our own.”
“Not really,” Parker says. “Mr. Brady is here.”
Hah, I love how she just referred to Spencer as Mr. Brady. I guess it’s better than calling him Mr. Fix-it or her soul mate.
“That’s exactly what I’m saying,” Shannon exclaims. “We’re all being observed. Don’t you want to be an exemplary representative of GFP Communications?”
“Hmm, I think I’m already an exemplary representative,” I say with a shrug.
“Me too,” Parker agrees.
“Sure, by spending your mornings gossiping,” Shannon snaps. “Although I should probably thank you. Your behavior only ensures my place as the future director of our team.”
Hah, she wishes.
“We’ll see,” I say.
