“I already called that a while ago,” Gabby says knowingly.
Normally I’d be hesitant about so many people being invested in my relationship, but this is different. Gabby and Reagan are my family, the sisters I never had. And I guess that would officially make Theo my brother—yeah that’s going to take some time to get used to.
“I have more news, and I hear I owe it all to you,” Gabby says. “I met with Elizabeth yesterday.”
‘So, you’re going to do it?”
She nods her head rapidly. “Elizabeth said it was your idea.”
I shrug. “There’s no one who could do a better job running Fun in the Sun in her absence.”
Gabby throws her arms around me. “You’re the best friend I’ve ever had.”
Tears fill my eyes again as I pat her on the back. I don’t know if anyone has ever said those words to me. I’ve always had a lot of friends, but I never had special bonds like I’ve formed with these two.
“Ugh. Enough crying for now. We have work to do.”
I’m sure there are plenty of tears ahead in the coming weeks as we prepare to move. At least I know I have the best people by my side, and now I have Cal too. Is it possible for dreams to come true—maybe it is?
Chapter Twenty-Four
“Maybe we should just go with the second one,” Reagan suggests. “It had the most space, and the view was to die for.”
I never thought I could get tired of looking at homes, but after the third condo Reagan and I see, I’m over it for the day.
“I agree,” I say. “Although any of them would be fine.”
We sit down at a table in By the Bay Caféto take a break from house hunting.
“And extra bonus, that condo is close to this place and the Pilates studio,” she adds excitedly. I appreciate that she’s trying to make a new place sound inviting.
“True.”
She folds her hands and places them on the table. “I’m sorry, Lila. I know this isn’t easy for you.”
I sigh. “It’s not, but like my mother so kindly reminded me—it’s just a house, so I need to get over it.”
The server stops by the table to take our drink order as I reach into my bag to retrieve my phone. I feel my face get hot when I see a text from Cal waiting for me.
Can’t wait to see you later.
He’s been working, so I haven’t seen him since our dinner and mini golf adventure. I’m almost to the point of counting down the minutes, which goes against everything I would normally do after one evening with someone. It’s safe to say that I’ve officially lost all control of my emotions.
“I’m assuming by the wattage of your smile that you got a message from Cal,” Reagan sings. “Your face practically lit up the room.”
Ugh. I didn’t want to get all swoony, but I guess it’s too late for that.
“It’s really obvious and annoying, isn’t it?”
Reagan shakes her head. “Not at all. You’ve seen how I am around Jeremy. When something orsomeonemakes you happy, there’s no reason to hide it.”
“I know,” I say. “I just never thought I would behave like this.”
Reagan gasps.
“Calm down, it’s not that big of a deal,” I tell her.
“No, it’s not that. But you better brace yourself,” she whispers.
