I’ve had some wild dreams in my life, some of which have been very vivid. The worst are those dreams that are so perfect that you don’t want to wake up. When I open my eyes, I shoot out of bed, panic immediately setting in as I try to remember if my evening with Cal really happened. My heart is racing as I wait for my phone to turn on. Peace comes over my body when I see the last text I received from him just a few hours ago. Holy crap, it really happened. I lean back against my quilted headboard and close my eyes.
It’s not unusual for me to throw all caution to the wind and take a risk. I’ve been skydiving, swimming with sharks, and I jumped off a cliff in Maui. This might be my biggest risk yet, and I’m only slightly terrified.
It’s almost ten o’clock, and I have a lot to get done today. I’m not looking forward to sorting through a bunch of old boxes, but maybe it will keep my mind off Cal and how freaking unbelievable last night was. I crawl out of bed and throw on a pair of leggings and a tank top.
Reagan and Gabby are in the kitchen when I finally make it out of my room.
Reagan is standing over a griddle, flipping pancakes.
“Are you cooking?”
She laughs. “I was in the mood for pancakes, but thankfully I only had to add water to the mix.”
I breathe a sigh of relief. “Thank goodness. That seems easy enough.”
Gabby raises her eyebrows at me, the corner of her mouth curling up. “Good morning, Lila.”
I grab a coffee cup out of the cabinet. “Good morning, Gabby. Why do you have that smug look on your face?”
“No reason,” she says innocently.
“Uh-huh.”
“How was dinner with yourfriendCal?”
I smile. “Okay, spill. What do you know?”
Guys talk even more than we do, so it wouldn’t shock me if Theo already got the scoop this morning.
Reagan continues to flip pancakes.
“Let me think,” she pauses, tapping her finger against her lips. “The only thing I heard was that it was one of the best nights of Cal’s life.”
Reagan raises one eyebrow. And in one instant we all scream in unison.
“Oh, my gosh, you guys—it was unreal,” I gush, tears filling my eyes. “Everything about it.”
“Holy crap, Lila’s crying,” Reagan exclaims, fanning her face.
“I’m not—oh hell, fine.”
We all sit around the island and eat pancakes while I describe the evening, starting with the visit to Cal’s parents' house.
“You guys got caught making out while playing mini golf?” Reagan shouts. “Oh, please don’t give Jeremy any ideas.”
My roommates swoon over Cal’s admission, and I’m thrilled to relive every magical detail.
“Theo called Cal this morning to give him some news, so that’s when he told him.”
“News?” I ask.
She nods. “We set a wedding date.”
That reminds me that Cal asked me to be his date to the wedding. Of course that was earlier in the evening before we really poured out our feelings.
“Oh yeah, Cal and I are attending the wedding together.”
