What?And why is she whispering?

“Reagan, yoo-hoo.”

A shiver shoots down my spine. It’s Bethany—and her voice is just as irritating as she is.

When I look up, I see her approaching our table with Jordan right behind her.

Oh boy, this is going to be fun. I almost forgot that Jordan and Bethany were spending time together, and I guess he hasn’t grown tired of her antics yet. Despite my urge to drag him away from her, Jordan’s personal life is none of my business. I can either make this weird or wish him well.

“Hey, guys,” Reagan says politely. She’s such a good person, we should all strive to be more like Reagan.

“Hi, Jordan. Bethany.” My greeting doesn’t come out as kind as Reagan’s, but I should at least get anAfor effort.

Jordan says hello, but I can tell he feels a bit uncomfortable. It’s no secret that I’m not a Bethany fan.

“I was just thinking about you two,” Bethany exclaims dramatically. “I really need to get back to that Pilates class.”

Reagan looks at me and forces a smile. “Definitely.”

“Well, we don’t want to interrupt your lunch meeting,” Jordan says, taking Bethany by the elbow. “It was nice to see you.”

I groan under my breath. I can’t believe I’m about to do this, but here we go. “No, you’re fine,” I say, fighting the urge to poke myself in the eye with my fork. “In fact, why don’t you guys join us?”

Reagan chokes on her water. She probably thinks I’ve completely lost my mind—and maybe I have.

“Really?” Bethany asks. All three of them are staring at me with looks of utter shock on their faces, and I can’t blame them.

“Yeah, we’re not having a meeting. We just finished looking at some condos.”

I don’t mention Bethany’s poor choice to spill the beans to Reagan about the move. It all turned out okay anyway, and there’s no reason to keep dredging it up.

The server stops by to take our orders, and surprisingly Bethany is somewhat pleasant. She asks lots of questions about the places we looked at, and she even seems genuinely interested. I just hope Reagan proceeds with caution because she’s been down this road with Bethany before.

Bethany and Reagan start discussing an old friend from Chicago, giving Jordan and me a chance to chat.

“How’s life treating you?” I ask.

He smiles. “Really good, actually.”

I nod my head in Bethany’s direction. “Are you sure?”

He chuckles. “I know you two don’t have the best history.”

“Yeah, you could say that.”

“Believe it or not, she’s really trying to make amends with Reagan,” he says softly.

“That’s what I’ve heard,” I say, taking a sip of my water.

“She knows she’s caused a lot of turmoil, and she’s realized that she doesn’t want to lose the one person who’s stood by her most of her life.”

I glance over at Bethany who’s showing Reagan something on her phone. This brings about the question—can people really change? Maybe she has seen the error of her ways, or maybe it’s all a big act to make Jordan think she’s a better person. Either way, he obviously sees another side of her, and so did Paul. She definitely has some influence over the men, and she knows it. I just don’t understand why she keeps latching on to my friends. Miami is full of eligible men who would gladly put up with a woman like Bethany.

“I hope you’re right,” I say doubtfully. “Reagan is one of the best people I know, and I don’t want to see her hurt by Bethany again.”

He nods. “I think she’s going to surprise you.”

I let out a sigh. For Jordan’s sake, I hope he’s right. Unfortunately, it’s going to take more than one lunch to make me join Team Bethany.
