“Are you crying?”
She clears her throat loudly. “No.”
“You are,” I exclaim. “I didn’t mean to make you cry.”
“You’re a great sister too,” she wails.
Tears burn in my eyes.
“I want you to be happy more than anything,” she continues, her voice shaking.
“I know you do.”
“Okay, then follow your heart and don’t let anything stand in your way.”
“I won’t. I love you, Kennedy.”
“I love you too, little sis.”
I’m wiping my eyes as I walk to the kitchen. When Gabby sees me, she rushes to my side.
“Oh no, Reagan. What happened? Are you okay?”
I fan my face with my hand. “Yes. I just had an emotional sister moment with Kennedy on the phone.”
She looks confused.
“I’ll tell you all about our conversation later, but Jeremy’s on his way over.”
Her eyes grow wide. “Oh, my gosh. I’m assuming that means your date went well?”
Heat fills my cheeks. “Yes. Very well.”
Gabby squeals in delight.
“Okay, I’ll let you get ready to see him. I can’t wait to hear everything.”
I grab a glass of water and then rush to my bathroom to clean myself up and brush my teeth. I quickly change out of my pajamas and into a sundress. I run a brush through my hair, and just as I spray perfume on my wrists, the doorbell rings. I inhale deeply and walk toward the door.
When I open the door, Jeremy has his hands hidden behind his back and a twinkle in his eyes.
“Did you bring me more flowers?” I ask.
“Nope. Better.”
He produces a box from Donut Giant, and I throw my head back.
“You’re so bad. I can’t eat any more of those things.”
He wraps his free arm around me and pulls me toward his body.
“Come on, Blondie. Haven’t you guessed that donuts are my love language?”
I place my hands on his cheeks and gently kiss his lips.
“Thank you,” I whisper.
He nuzzles into my neck, and I close my eyes as pure joy fills my body.
