“Wait, that’s how you ended your date?”
“Yeah.”
She grows quiet.
“Kennedy, are you still there?”
“Yes. I’m just disappointed for you.”
I purse my lips.
“It is what it is. Golden is his first priority, and he was honest with me about that.”
“True, but—”
“There’s nothing else to say,” I say, my voice cracking slightly. “I’ve already decided that I’m not waiting around should something or someone else come into the picture. However, that’s not the case. I’m not missing out on anything else because no one has come along.”
“Yet,” she offers.
“Exactly.”
The image of Jeremy pops into my head, but I don’t say anything to my sister.
“So, you’re okay with this?”
This is a good question. It’s not ideal. Obviously Dante is attracted to me too. I believe he wants to spend more time together, but he’s in a tricky situation.
“Well, I really enjoyed our day together, and it certainly seemed like he did too. We have amazing chemistry, and I hope we can continue to see each other. In the meantime, I have my work, and my friends, and—”
“Does that mean you’re willing to let me set you up with someone?” she interrupts.
I sigh. She’s not going to give it up until I say yes, and how will I know if I don’t?
“Fine,” I say. “But not until after Bethany leaves.”
“Deal. And I have my own visitor to tend to.” She pauses. “I have a good feeling. I think exciting things are ahead for you. My senses have been very in tune lately.”
“Did you sage the house again?”
“No. But that’s not a bad idea. I should probably do it before Barbara gets here.”
I laugh. “And maybe again after a few days of her being there?”
“Oh, yes. Good idea. I guess I’ve rubbed off on you after all.”
“Yeah, totally,” I say through gritted teeth.
“Do you want me to bring some over before Bethany comes?”
I scoff at the idea. Lila would probably lose her mind if she came home to a house reeking of sage.
“I think we’re good, thanks.”
After we get off the phone, I stare at the ceiling for a few minutes. For once I hope my sister’s feeling is right, because I’m ready for something great to happen. When I made the decision to move to Miami, I was ready for a new beginning and whatever the future held in store. I know that keeping my heart open to all possibilities will lead me to happiness—with or without Dante. Time will tell.
I drag myself to the kitchen where I find Gabby.
“Hey. How was your day?”
