He jerks my cuffs and slams me against the wall, and I take a page out of the old soccer handbook, collapsing on the ground.

“Oh shit, I’m sorry, officer!” I yell as the crowd gathers around me, everyone’s phone held out in front of them as they record the show. “Ow, my leg! Listen, man, I’m just trying to get through security to find my girlfriend and tell her I’m such a dumbass.”

“Excuse me, what’s going on here?” Another security officer steps in.

“This fella is way outta line!” the first officer says. “He’s saying bad things about my boy. Don’t worry, I’ve got it handled—”

“Gwen, if you’re watching this, please don’t get on that plane! I’m sorry about what I said. You know I didn’t mean it. Fuck, I’m so excited to be having a baby with you that it’s all I can think about. I don’t know what this means for us or what happens next, but I know I want to figure it out. I want to write our own story, and I believe we can make this work. I’ll get a normal job. I’ll put on a suit and tie every day. Hell, I’ll be a stay-at-home dad and support your career. Please, let’s just try—”

“Okay, lover boy, get up. You have the right to remain silent—”

“Jack! Jack! I’m over here! Stay right there. I’m coming to get you!” I hear Gwen’s sweet voice scream over the crowd.

“Stay back, lady, this man’s being arrested for … uh … resisting arrest.”

“If you’re arresting him, then you may as well take me, too.” She holds her hands in front of her as the security guards look around in confusion.

“Ma’am, it doesn’t work like—”

“Jack! Are you alright! I’m so sorry! I want all of that, too.” She rushes to me, ignoring the security guards.

“Ma’am, please back away from the man …”

“You can either cuff me now, or I’ll give you a reason. Take your pick!” She eyes the security guard, letting her eyes drift to his groin.

“Uh, Sheila, go on and cuff the crazy lady, too,” the first guard says. “Ok, folks, that’s enough of that. There’s nothin’ to see here. Let’s just keep this line moving along.”

It’s there, with my face pressed against the rough airport carpet, that I fall in love with Gwen all over again. “I love you so much. As soon as I get out of these handcuffs, you’re not going to be able to keep me off of you.”

“I love you, too, Tarzan.”

CHAPTERTHIRTY-NINE

Gwen

“Areyou ready to find out the sex of the baby?” the doctor says as she rubs the ultrasound wand over my small baby bump.

I look at Jack, who’s practically reeling with excitement. He’s been talking about this appointment for weeks, making pro and con lists for all the reasons to find out or not about the baby’s sex. His decision changes daily, but today, it seems like …

“Yes!” He grips my hand, and a warm wave of comfort washes over me.

“Are you sure?” the doctor teases. She knows how excited he’s been, probably because he’s left her approximately one hundred voicemails over the last three months.

He sucks in a long breath and nods his head. “Tell us, doctor. We’re ready.”

She laughs and rubs the instrument around my belly. I must say, this experience is far more comfortable than the dildo cam I received in the hospital. I’m learning pregnancy is not for the weak.

“Okay, let’s see here … It looks like you’re having a little … girl!”

Jack lets out a shriek so shrill that my eye actually waters, and I can’t keep from smiling as my heart fills with so much love I feel like I could burst.

“We’re having a little girl!” He kisses me on the cheek, then tucks his face into the crook of my neck and whispers, “You’ve made me the happiest man in the world. I can’t wait to raise our daughter with you.”

Hot tears flow down my cheeks as I kiss him like we’re the only two in the world. I close my eyes, and it’s like it’s just all alone on that island again.

“I’ll give you two some privacy. You can meet me in my office after you’re done celebrating.” The doctor laughs.

The door clicks closed, and Jack pulls away as he digs for something in his pocket.
