Chapter 1
There are moments in a person’s life when everything comes together in perfect harmony.
This was not one of those moments.
It’s the same song and dance people have lived before. A girl falls in love with a man whom her parents would never approve of. That’s her story – rather their story.
Amalee was barely a teenager when he worked for her parents. Twenty years her senior, she was completely and utterly smitten. Standing at six-foot-four, his light brown skin and deep brown eyes drew her in. He kept his distance at first, but eventually, she broke down his walls. It was a dangerous affair. Her mother’s second in command, he risked losing everything to be with her. They carried on, her parents never the wiser. Sure, they suspected she was involved with someone, but they never questioned. They were too focused on teaching her the etiquette of being a queen. Her mother had the perfect ideal man picked out for Amalee in her head.
And he was not it. She remembered once her mother caught her staring at him as they worked. Her mother, being the snob she was, told her men like him did not mix with women of her stature. He was here to protect her, nothing more. That’s when Amalee knew she would never have her heart’s desire.
Then the unthinkable happened. Something that would change everything. She’d hidden it from her parents, even now they had no clue. But the letter in her pocket would change that – forever.
“What are you doing here?” the hurt and anguish were as bright as the morning sky after sunrise.
“Like I said, we need to talk.”
“You made yourself very clear months ago, Amalee. Remember? If I remember correctly, your exact words were ‘it’s time I acted like a Queen and found a suitable partner.’ Or has your memory betrayed you?”
Amalee recoiled with guilt. He was right, she had said those words to him, but it came after the guilt of lying to him ate away at her soul. She realized when Onika caught them, it was too dangerous to carry on the affair. She loved him – more than he would probably ever comprehend. That love made her sacrifice her heart to protect him.
“No… I remember. There were… are things I did not tell you. And now,” she took the slip of paper from her pocket, “I wasn’t honest when I told everyone about the letter yesterday. I received two.”
“And you’re just now telling me?”
Amalee handed the parchment over to him. Although it didn’t come right out and say it, she knew what it was threatening. His face went through several emotions as he read over the words.
Your past is not buried
It lies in plain sight.
A betrayal so deep,
No words will make it right.
Your soul will be fractured,
As I snuff out your light.
“Amalee, what does this mean? What past and who is hiding in plain sight?”
