Chapter 16

“Commander,” Amalee stepped into his office, “Where are we in finding my son?”

“Unfortunately, it’s as if he just disappeared. There is no trace of him anywhere.”

“How is that possible? A child just doesn’t disappear.”

“Your Majesty, we have to assume this was a planned attack, and whoever is responsible took your child. We will continue to search, but we need that journal.”

“I’ll continue looking, in the meantime, your men are to keep searching. I don’t care what they have to do or who they have to pay – find him, Commander.”

Amalee stepped into the hallway and leaned against the wall. She needed to get herself together if she was going to rain lightning down on the monster responsible for all the carnage. The rage coursing through her veins made her understand what Onika had been struggling with – she too wanted to annihilate everything in her path.

“Your Majesty,” Officer Stephens startled her out of her thoughts, her head swirling with a mess of emotion.

“Chris… I didn’t see you there.”

“I…” he shifted nervously, “I wanted to check on you. I heard the news and planned to let you know I will do everything in my power to bring home your boy.”

Amalee took his hand in hers, “Thank you.”

“What’s going on?” Dante’s voice boomed through the hallway, causing her to drop Chris’s hand and step back.

“Constable,” Chris swallowed nervously, “I was just checking on the Queen.”

“Does that require your hands?”

“No… I think you’re misunderstanding, sir.”

“And I think you have a job to do, Officer.”

Nodding his head, “If you need anything, Your Majesty, let me know.”

Amalee watched him walk away. Her blood pressure rising with each step he took down the corridor.

“What in the fuck is your problem?” She spun. Jamming her finger into his chest. “He was only making sure I was ok, unlike you. It’d be best if you remember I am your Queen.” She clenched her hands by her side.

Dante stepped toward her, crowding her back against the wall, “Why was he touching you?”

“That,” she slipped out from under his arm, “is none of your business. You haven’t spoken to me in days… and while I understand I deserve your silence – you do not have the right to question me.”

Amalee stormed away, never looking back at him as she made her way to the garden. When she stepped out, she was surprised to find Emersyn waiting for her.

“Emersyn,” she tilted her head at her cousin in question, “what are you doing here?”

“Oh… Constable Graham was supposed to tell you I was here,” Emersyn held her arms open and engulfed Amalee into an embrace, “you look like shit.”

“Gee, thanks,” Amalee pulled free, “I can’t sleep or eat. My heart is broken for so many reasons. Honestly, I don’t know how much longer I can go on.”

“Stop that.” Emersyn put her hand on her hip and glared at Amalee, “We will find them. Come, sit down and tell me about everything.”
