Chapter 10
Her mood was being felt by everyone around her. Amalee was disgusted with herself for what happened between her and Dante. Not because she disliked what they did, but because she wanted more.
Amalee sat on the floor of her closet, the contents of the box scattered around her. She was looking at the pictures she kept as a reminder of what she lost. She didn’t know why she kept the mementos of her biggest regret – part of her wished she’d made a different decision, but fear pushed her into doing what she thought was best.
A knock at her outer door had her shoving everything back into its place.
“Coming,” she hurried to the door, “Captain?”
She wasn’t expecting him to be standing there, “Is everything ok?”
“Your Majesty. I tried calling your phone, but when you didn’t answer…”
Amalee glanced at the table behind her, remembering she’d forgotten to plug her cell phone in. “Shit… I forgot to charge my phone.”
“Another letter has arrived for you.”
Blowing the air out of her lungs, “Great.”
Amalee followed the Captain toward the Commander’s office. She wasn’t surprised to see Dante standing behind the Commander's desk. She’d managed to keep her distance from him since their encounter in the garden, knowing eventually they’d run into each other.
“A letter arrived?”
“Yes,” he handed it over to her, “It was found outside the castle door.”
Furrowing her brow, “How is it someone can get this here without being seen? Didn’t our cameras catch anyone?”
“No… it’s the same with every Kingdom. No one sees anything. It’s as if they appear magically.”
“Wonderful… we’re dealing with someone magical…” Amalee ripped the envelope open. She was tired of these games. Reading the words, her stomach dropped.
“What is it?” Dante started to move, “What does it say?”
Amalee took a breath as she read it out loud,
When you faced difficult times,
You chose the path out of fear.
The lies you weaved will unravel,
Your time is drawing near.
“And that means what?” Captain Howard rubbed his head, his patience growing thin.
Amalee swallowed, “I don’t know.”
She could feel Dante’s eyes on her, boring a hole straight to her soul.
“Maybe it's referring to your secret love affair?” Commander Gentry laughed.
“Affair?” Amalee narrowed her eyes at him, “I’m not sure what you're talking about, Commander, but I am not having an affair.”
“It was a joke, Your Majesty. I apologize.”
A loud rumble sounded in the distance, causing everyone to turn their heads to the sound.
“What the fuck was that?” Captain Howard rushed to the window, “FUCK!”
