Chapter 29

“HOLY SHIT,” Amalee paced her quarters, the journal clutched in her hand.

“Take a breath,” Dante gripped her shoulders, halting her movement, “You need to get yourself calm so you can read what it says.”

“I know… I just – it’s been here the whole time. How did we miss it? We searched this place so many times.”

“It doesn’t matter… what matters is that you have it in your hands now.”

“Oh god…” Amalee walked to her dresser, “I’m scared, Dante.”

“Scared of what?”

“What if there is something in this book that changes my life? I’ve watched Onika and Sarifena’s lives destroyed.”

“What if that book holds the key to Dimitra’s location? You must read it, I’ll be here with you as you do, ok?”

“Fine,” she took a deep breath, walked to the bed, and sat down. Dante stripped his clothes off, leaving only his boxers, and slipped in behind her.

Taking the journal from her, “Get comfortable, it’ll make it easier to read.”

Nodding, she stood and tugged off her shirt and pushed down her jeans. Grabbing a nighty, she eased the satin gown over her head and crawled back into the bed. Settling herself between his legs, she leaned against his chiseled chest and opened the book. She glazed over the parts she already knew about and thumbed to the end, stopping on an entry closer to his death.

I should have known my past would catch me. Emersyn is nearing her ascension and will take the crown soon, so no time like the present for evil to come calling. All this time, I had no idea I’d fathered another child. Emmalyn knew about Onika and Sarifena, accepting the situation for what it was. But this? This is beyond salvageable. Especially now that they want to destroy all that is Emersyn’s.

I told Emmalyn we should leave town. Go to our secret place – our oasis away from stress. The rock garden was turned into a sanctuary by my great-grandparents so many years ago – before the land became barren. Even with all the wasted land, the garden cave is a sight to behold. The sunsets on the ocean, making it appear to be on fire – breathtaking to see. Emmalyn said we should just face this like everything else, I hope a meeting with Stephanie is the right thing to do. I need Sarifena and Onika protected.

Hopefully, the new Commander will keep my daughter safe – I’m hoping he is her compliment. That way, he will take care of her like no other could.

“Oh my, God, Dante. I think this will help them find where she is at. It talks about a rock garden in the deadlands. He said when the sun sets on the ocean, it looks like it’s on fire.”

“Anything else that could help?”

“Let me keep reading. He talks about another child but doesn’t come out and say who.” Amalee flipped the page, hoping to find something more. They needed to find Dimitra – and fast.

I am worried about the trip to the Sapphire Kingdom. Fear makes me want to retreat and protect my family. Looking back on my life, I never thought my playboy ways would harm my future wife – yet, it has. Why didn’t she tell me she was pregnant? I would have done the right thing and claimed him as mine. Being married to the Queen would have meant he wanted for nothing.

Now, he is filled with bitterness and rage. Anger, he is pointing at the kingdoms. I hope we can stop him. A man who will sacrifice his own mother for revenge is dangerous.

“He had a son.”

“What?” Dante grabbed the journal and read for himself, “Fuck…” sliding out from behind her, he grabbed his phone.

Amalee watched in shocked silence as he told Commander Gentry to call the other kingdoms. He didn’t care what time it was, they needed to have a meeting now. Dax didn’t come right out and say who the woman was, or his son’s name, but knowing he’d killed her meant they were playing with a psychopath.
