Chapter 13
“What did you say?” Dante stiffened against her.
“I was young… my mother had such control over me. I knew if she ever found out – you’d lose your job or worse, she’d find a way to ruin you more. I reacted out of fear, but mostly because I wanted to protect you.”
“You’re not making sense, Amalee.”
“I didn’t leave to go to college… at least not entirely. I attended some classes until I couldn’t anymore. My mom thought I came home early because I was homesick, but the truth is, I couldn’t stay there and see him every day. It was too hard.”
“See who, Amalee?”
“Our son, Dante. I was pregnant with your baby.”
“Wait… you’re telling me you were pregnant and didn’t tell me.”
Amalee slipped off his lap and walked to the window, “Yes… no one knew.”
Dante pushed off the bed, pacing behind her. She could feel the rage, boiling off him in waves. Too afraid to turn around, she was stunned when the door to the room slammed open. Turning just in time to see his backside fleeing.
“Um, Your Majesty?” Officer Stephens peeked around the door, “Is everything ok?”
Unable to speak, Amalee dropped to her knees and sobbed. The ragged cry ripped through her chest, tearing the very fiber of her being in two.
“Christ!”
Amalee felt Chris grip her under the arms, “I got you.”
“He’s gone… he just left.”
Her body shook as she tried to catch her breath between her wails of pain.
“Who left? Please, Your Majesty…” he tried to sit her up, “what happened? Why did the Constable leave so angry?”
“I love him, Chris… and I ruined everything.”
He tried to help her, holding her body against his, “What are you talking about? You’re in love with the Constable?” He asked, bitterness lacing his words.
“It doesn’t matter. He will never forgive me.”
“Forgive you for what? Come on, sit down, please.” He moved her to the edge of the bed again, easing her to her butt.
“I never told him about our son.”
“Son? Look, you're talking crazy. Maybe I should call someone.”
Chris grabbed his radio and called for the Commander. He didn’t know what else to do. Amalee was making no sense to him, he felt like he was in over his head.
Commander Gentry rushed into the room, “Constable Graham called me. He said I was needed here. What is wrong? I heard you calling me on the radio as I stepped into the elevator.”
“I don’t know, Commander. Constable Graham stormed out of the room, and I came in, and she was talking out of her head.” He rubbed his hand over his head, “She keeps talking about a baby.”
“Your Majesty,” Commander Gentry approached her, his hand outstretched, “Can you tell me what’s going on? The Constable did not sound himself.”
“He hates me, Commander. I’ve just told him something I’ll live to regret for the rest of my life. I was pregnant with his child. And instead of telling him, I ran away and gave the baby up. Now…”
“Holy Shit… Are you telling me the missing boy is your child?”
“Yes. Mine and the Constables.” She looked at the two men, their faces a mask of shock, “Now you understand… I’ve ruined everything. My son is missing, and the only man I’ve ever loved despises me. I can’t stay here another moment. Please, Commander, take me home.”
