“Brother, what’s going on? What aren't you telling me?” Pretty Boy asks.

“She’s up to something. I just don’t know what it is yet.” I’ve been so lost in my own shit that I've missed what’s going on with her and the Cartel.

“I got you, brother. Take care of your girl, and we’ll deal with Star until you get back here and can handle things,” Pretty Boy says, no questions asked.

I head back into the hospital to my baby girl. Star better pray Starla is okay, and she did nothing to her and knew nothing about it. If she did and I find out about it—she’ll be the first woman I put in the ground.

Iwalk through my apartment door I now share with Candy to find her sitting on the couch. I smile wide at her sitting there in her bathrobe, a mud mask, and cotton between her toes. Busting out laughing, I fall on the couch, taking her glass of wine, drinking deep.

“Hey, you twat, that was mine.” Candy mock glares.

“Now it’s mine!” I reply before drinking the last of the wine in the glass.

“Is that a sign of a great date or because he is only good-looking with nothing upstairs?” Candy questions, painting the last of her toes.

“It was amazing. He took me to the finest restaurant and wined and dined me. After dinner, we walked around downtown, looking at all the art and sculptures. We—”

“Gag me with a fucking spoon. Tell me the good stuff, you hoe!” Candy smacks me with a pillow stopping me mid-sentence.

Laughing, I throw the pillow back at her. “That’s the good stuff! What the hell do you want to know?”

“Don’t be a bitch. You know exactly what I wanna know.”

Groaning, I throw my head back, staring at the ceiling, trying to find a way to tell her that, yes, he is hot, and yes, he has sparked interest, but something about him is off. I haven’t been able to dig as deep into him as I would like. Between work, school, and helping Blue plan Vixen’s baby shower, things have been crazy. Plus, he always tries to get information about the club.

I would have missed the subtle questions and hints if I hadn’t spent the last few years being on guard and careful I didn’t say too much or answer questions the wrong way. Isaias wants something, and until I know exactly what that is, I will not give myself to someone who is just using me. The next time I give myself to anyone, it’ll be mine forever. If a girl like me gets a forever, that is.

“Talk to me, Edgy. What’s going on? You haven’t been you the last few weeks, and I’m starting to worry.” Candy looks more serious than I've ever seen her.

“It’s just—you know when you have that feeling that there is more going on than you know, and everyone is keeping you out of it? Whether it’s to protect you, or they can’t say, or who knows what the fucking issue is. That’s how I feel when I'm at the club and with Isaias. It’s always like there is shit going down, and I’m not allowed to know. That doesn’t make any sense. Ignore me.” I close my eyes to keep the tears back. I feel so damn alone.

My phone rings, and I don’t even look at it before sticking it to my ear. “Yeah?”

“Starla is sick. Torch and Razor are rushing her to the emergency room. Just thought you might want to know. Love ya,” Vixen says before hanging up.

I don’t think, I just slide my heels back on and ask Candy for the keys to her car. My only thought is Razor and Starla. What happened? What’s wrong?

“Are you going to tell me why you need my car?” Candy asks.

“Razor is on the way to the hospital with Starla, and they have no idea what’s going on,” I tell her as I pull the door closed and rush to her car.

I make it to the emergency room to find several brothers standing around. Coin comes out of the sliding glass doors, and I rush over to him. “Where are they? What’s going on?”

“Flyboy is working on Starla. Razor is lost. He can’t lose her, Edge. Worst of all, they won’t let anyone back or tell us a motherfucking thing.” Coin sounds sadder than I’ve ever seen him.

“Hey, she is going to be just fine. Starla is just as strong as her daddy! I'll figure out what’s going on and let you know, okay?” I reply, keeping my cool when inside I want to scream and cry with worry.

“Always keeping us calm when we’re on the edge, huh?” Coin chuckles, walking to his bike parked with the rest of the guys.

I make my way toward the ER entrance, pulling my phone out to text Shiloh. I met Shiloh when I started classes, and we became study buddies. She wants to be a nurse, so she got a job doing registration to get a vibe for the hospital.

Shiloh: Yeah, I’m working.

Me: Can you let me in? My friend is here with his daughter, and they aren’t letting anyone in.
