“I’ll catch up with you,” Colton said, waving off Leon and the other players. “Like everyone else, GSA loves a star pitcher.”
Leon lingered a bit longer than the others, eyeing Colton as if he were evaluating him—the sincerity in his jovial voice, the free nature of his body language. Isaac’s anxiousness quickly twisted back to anger the longer Leon looked Colton over.
“You say star like you’re the only one on the team.” Leon grinned, phony and twitchy to fight back a frown. “I’m a great pitcher, too. Though, not the kind this lot’s looking for.”
Leon nodded at Isaac, who bared his teeth in response. Colton merely laughed off the joke, adding his own gay baseball humor onto Leon’s cutting comment.
When Leon finally left and the rest of the class cleared out, Isaac led Colton out into the empty hallway for a private discussion.
“Why do you always do that?” Isaac snapped.
“Do what?”
“Play pretend when someone’s insulting you. Right to your face, in fact.”
“Because unlike you, I learned a long time ago that life’s a lot easier if you don’t make everyone an enemy.”
“And unlike you, I learned life’s a lot easier if you stop treating enemies like friends.” Isaac glowered. “That douchebag pitcher needs his teeth knocked out.”
“Leon’s an acquired taste for sure.” Colton sighed. “But he’s got it out for me, and it’s better to play along than start an outright feud.”
Colton explained the complications he dealt with as Isaac led him down the hallway. He revealed how his seemingly starlit spot on the baseball team was quite precarious, given his disciplinary issues, struggling grades, and homophobic teammates who bucked against his position. Sure, many supported him, but it only took a few complaints to make waves. Leon led the tug-of-war for starting pitcher, for star player, for everyone’s favorite MVP.
Isaac lost focus while listening to the explanations, almost forgetting where he intended to lead Colton until they reached a four-way intersection near some elevators.
“Now you see why essays and assignments aren’t at the top of my to-do list.” Colton wiggled his eyebrows, being cute, which didn’t work on Isaac.
“Maybe if you spent more time studying, you’d have a better solution to deal with your enemies.”
“Ooooooh.” Colton smirked. “Is that why you’re so crafty with your punishments?”
“You wanna see punishment?” Isaac stepped closer, removing any distance between him and Colton.
The near embrace almost made Colton fall back against the wall. He might be out, but he didn’t do PDA with guys, especially guys like Isaac.
“Meet me in the bathroom, last stall.”
“What?”
“I need some relief, and honestly, you need a lesson on what happens when you run your mouth during class.”
“Here?” Colton shook his head to protest.
“You think I’m gonna drag you back to my dorm room every time I wanna plow you?” Isaac’s icy blue eyes locked onto Colton. “Did you take me back to your place every time I sucked your dick?”
“No, I never brought you…” Colton paused, frantically checking over his shoulder for anyone approaching, but there was no one around—Isaac knew that much at this time of day. “This isn’t high school. We can’t just mess around behind the bleachers or in an empty locker room or my car.”
“Why not?” Isaac pressed himself against Colton, relishing the heavy beat of the nervous jock’s heart. “From what I’ve gathered, alpha stud baseball star fucks around wherever he feels like swinging his bat.”
“That’s different.”
“How so?” Isaac batted his eyes, tempting Colton to confirm his apprehension for public play. “Please explain how me fucking your throat in the bathroom is different from you getting sucked off in a locker room.”
“Well, for starters, you already know I have an issue with public indecency.” Colton huffed. “The rumors are true. I got caught getting a blowjob, and it nearly ruined me. You know, you can get arrested for that kind of stuff.”
Isaac tsked. “Not if we’re careful.”
Colton’s Adam’s apple bulged as he swallowed hard.
