The next morning, I wake to the sound of Dion movingaround the room.Slowly I sit up and rub my eyes to find him dressed, getting ready to go somewhere.
“Where are you going?”I ask him, but he only glances at me, not saying a word.
Climbing out of bed, the room tilts on its axis and I fall back on the bed and clutch my head.“Get back in bed, you aren’t to leave this room today.Sleep off your hangover,” he tells me.I shake my head yet that only seems to do more damage when I remember the conversation I overheard in the car.But before I can question him more, he is out the door, the lock clicking in place.I hear the soft murmurs of him talking to someone.
Rushing to the door, I yank on the handle to find it locked, but I can hear him talking to whoever the guard is.Pressing my ear against the door, I catch the tail end of the conversation.
“Don’t let her out or anyone in,” Dion tells someone.
“Is everything okay?”the man asks, and I find it is my usual door watcher’s voice.
“Yes, but I am going to investigate a lead we got, apparently they have a hideout at Wildbane Pack; we are goingto check it out. We’re hoping to drop by the council, too, so we can get information about the attack on Alpha Farren’s pack.”
My heart races hearing my pack’s name, immediately my mind goes to Granny and Caleb.I have to warn them!I try to listen some more, however, nothing of use is offered, just that he has charted a plane to get him there faster, and he is expecting to be back sometime tomorrow.
My mind is racing, knowing if he goes back there, he and his men might stop at Granny’s to tie up a few loose ends.I can’t let that happen.
Rushing to the closet, I rummage through the clothes I got from Amanda, trying to find something suitable to wear. But I have another issue, how do I get past the guard?Leaving that to ponder about later, I get dressed before sneaking to my jewelry box and retrieving one of the belladonna pills.I just need to get to the town nearby and call her to tell her to run and warn the pack.
Moving to the bathroom, I quickly swallow my tablet when I hear the door open.Panicking, I grab Dion’s robe and wrap it around myself, covering my clothes.Wandering out, I find it’s the guard. He sets a tray of food on the bedside table before turning and leaving.
Great, Dion is planning on leaving me here for two days.Well, jokes on him because this is the perfect opportunity for me to escape.
I just have to figure out how to do that.Moving toward the bedside table, I grab the juice off the tray and sip it before sitting on the bed, but the moment I do, I double over as pain ripples through my stomach.I gasp, the glass slipping from my hand as I clutch my stomach.
It takes me a good five minutes to get up off the floor as the belladonna burns its way through my system.I really need to look up the long-term effects of belladonna use, surely this can’t be normal?
Wiping my forehead, I lean against the side of the bed trying to regather myself when my eyes move to the wall and thewindow beside it.A huge tree sits by that window. If only I can get that window open, I can use the tree to climb down and run for the garages.Getting to my feet, I stride toward the window and scrutinize the lock.
It’s nothing fancy, but I know hitting the glass it won’t break because I’ve tried previously.Which leaves one option: manipulating the lock.Moving around the room, I try to find something to use to try to jam inside the keyhole when I spot my fork sitting on the tray.
Snatching it up, I bend the prongs and move toward the window, jamming it in the lock.
Hours pass, and I am still trying to open the window.I peer out, knowing that any minute the guard will come in and deliver lunch, and I am just about to give up, giving it one last hit on the end, when I hear a click.
I stare in shock at the lock and the millimeter it moved.Carefully holding it, I twisted the fork, feeling the lock give way. Finally, it turned, just as I heard the door handle turn.I dart away from the window, rushing back to the bed.I climb under the blanket just as the guard walks in.
“Luna,” he greets, I nod in return.
“Did Dion say how long I have to remain in here, I am bored,” I whine.
“He’ll be back tomorrow,” the guard offers.
“He wants me locked in here until he returns?”I question with fake outrage.I know he’ll think something suspicious if I am not challenging him on this, given the number of times I have.He sighs heavily.“Take it up with the Alpha when he returns,” he offers before turning on his heel.
“Wait!”I call, but he quickly escapes, and I smile, seeing the door close behind him.Grabbing my shoes, I slip them on and return to the window.
With one last glance toward the door, I push the window open and feel the cool air rush in.My heart ispounding as I climb onto the windowsill and hoist myself out.
I can’t see the ground from where I am, but I know it’snot too far away.I swing my leg over the windowsill and take a deep breath before gripping the tree branch and lowering myself, carefully inching my way down until my feet touch the ground.
Once my feet hit the ground, I take off running toward the garage, hoping I can find a car to use.
As I run, my mind is racing with all the possibilities of what could go wrong.Dion is a dangerous man, and if he catches me trying to escape, he won’t be happy. But the thought of my pack being in danger is too much to bear, and I know I have to try to warn them.
When I reach the garages, I quickly scan the area for any sign of anyone.I then start pulling on handles, looking for one that is unlocked while praying they’ve left a key.It took me a few minutes, but finally, I spotted one parked in the corner. As I approach it, I see the keys are still in the ignition.
I quickly climb into the driver’s seat and start the car.A sense of relief washes over me when it comes to life beneath me.But now comes the hard part: actually driving and getting past Dion’s guards at the gate.I don’t have my license and have never taken driving lessons.Well, what’s a better time to start than now?
