“See, it’s only alcohol, she’s just drunk,” Dion assures her, scooping my legs out from underneath.

“But if it makes you feel better, I will leave the bottle here,” he tells her.Tara sighs heavily and moves toward me, while I lay like a deadweight in Dion’s arms, fighting to keep my eyes open. She pats my face gently.

“You have freckles,” I tell her, and she laughs.“Ah, I want freckles,” I pout.Tara snickers.

“Okay, you’re right, she is just drunk. But no more. And you,” Tara, stares down at me.“Will have a wicked hangover tomorrow, but whatever you did?Own up to it, I actually like you; it would be nice if you got to stick around.”

“Are you done? Can I take my mate now?”Tara says something, but I am already drifting off into oblivion.

Chapter 16

Setting Emery in bed, she rolls and buries her face in mypillow and immediately starts snoring.I run my fingers through my hair, annoyed that she still refused to admit what she had done.At the same time, my mind goes to the look on the women’s faces.I didn’t think when I had the Vodka brought out.

Not that there’s anything wrong with Vodka, but it’s the trauma the women have with it.It was used when they wouldn’t comply, laced with sedatives and forced down their throats, also used with truth serum. The women here are all close, having endured the worst horrors together.Bonded by trauma, the previous Alpha knew they’d never give each other up when they stepped out of line. And he liked science, liked experimenting on them.

So when one would run or misbehave, out came the Vodka, laced with whatever he needed to make them compliant.Unfortunately, it also came with other consequences.Even when he would force the information from them, not only did they have to watch each other be punished, but they were also punished for not handing over the information.

My intention was to get her drunk. From experience, most people can’t seem to hold their tongue while intoxicated.Nothing more than that.

“Let her sleep, Tara is right. You’re never going to gain her trust by treating her like this,” Deacon tells me.

“But it’s okay for her to break ours every chance she gets?”I ask him, and he sighs heavily in my head.He wants to go for a run, wants me to shift, and I can’t even remember the last time I shifted was.

“Six months and twelve days, not that I am counting or anything,” Deacon adds bitterly.

“Soon, once she gets her wolf, you can come forward whenever you want, it’s not like I keep you locked in my head,” I remind him.

“It’s not the same, and you know it, but I want to know what you plan on doing to our mate. For someone as old as you, you lack brain cells in the romance department.Shouldn’t you be trying to woo her not… not… Whatever the heck it is you’re doing? What are you doing exactly because I know one thing. It isn’t working,” Deacon huffs and I roll my eyes at his words.

Truthfully, I have no idea what I am doing.I’ve never felt like this with anyone. She is turning me into a monster. She brings a side out of me that I don’t like. Some possessive beast that wants to not only claim her but own her.Own her every thought, word. It’s hard to explain.I need her as much as I need to breathe, yet her rejection sets my blood on fire.

“Then what do you suggest?”I ask Deacon since he seems to want to play mate councilor.

“What are you asking me for? What the heck am I going to do with her?I have paws, not thumbs.I don’t know, you could start by being nice for once!”

“Or you could tell her the truth about her sister and parents, but after everything, I think that will go down about as well as poison with all you’ve done to her,” Deacon chimes in.

“She won’t believe me,” I remind him, and I know that for a fact.I’ve given her no reason to believe me.

“Then we find proof; you’re going to the warehousetomorrow anyway, surely you’ll find something there,” Deacon reminds me.

“But what about her lying to me, going behind our back to call her grandmother?”

“Let it go, Dion. She is nineteen, you killed her parents and brought her to a foreign place. The girl has been sheltered all her life, and her grandmother and brother are the only two people she has left. She is homesick; she misses her family, of course, she’ll look for any piece of them, even a lousy phone call!”he snaps at me.

“So do nothing?”

“No, I don’t know. You could try asking her?”he suggests, which, of course, would be the most obvious answer in the world and also the most boring.“You’re sick and a sadist,” Deacon growls, and I smirk.

“Now get to bed, it’s a long drive tomorrow, and hopefully, we find something that helps your kind of stupid,” Deacon growls, sauntering off to where I can’t reach him.

Tucking the covers around Emery, I brush her hair back from her face, then I go into the bathroom and strip my clothes off before turning the shower on.Stepping under the spray, I let the tension leave my body while my mind wanders back to what Amanda said about Alpha Farren and Callum. It strikes me as odd, and I know I need to somehow get my hands on the report from the morgue.

Something doesn’t add up.Alpha Callum sticks to himself.I may not like the man, but he had no reason to go back there once he had his daughter, and he isn’t one for breaking rules.Saying he broke the law by kidnapping his daughter back, however she is his daughter. But I don’t see Callum going back and stirring more trouble, knowing he would be putting his pack at risk.

So that leaves me with two thoughts: either the council is covering something up, or the council shut him up themselves and is framing Alpha Callum to take the blame.Either way, I will find out.Packs talk, rumors spread fast, and with so manyrogues these days, there are eyes and ears everywhere.
