“My therapist wants to do some sort of regression or hypnosis; I’m not sure.”
“Do you want me to come along?”
River’s beautiful amber eyes stared into mine. “Would you?”
“Of course.”
“Maybe you shouldn’t. I don’t want you to see me as broken or dirty if something awful comes up.”
“Oh, honey.” I closed my arms around her. “Nothing that happened to you will ever make you dirty in my eyes. I know that you went through things as a child that broke you in some way, and if you haven’t noticed, I’ve made it my life mission to help you heal.”
She teared up. “I’m so lucky that I met you and that thing you said downstairs, about you scoring out of your league, it’s not true.”
“No?”
“No. You’re the best fiancé I could ever have.” She kissed my hand and wrapped her legs around me. “But from now on, we won’t have secrets from each other, all right?”
I was about to agree, but added, “Except if it’s gifts or nice surprises.”
“Yes… and small things like telling me that you like my cooking even if you don’t.”
Like the team we were, there was a joint effort to move us away from the sad bubble we’d just been in to something lighter.
“You know Iadoreyour cooking,” I said with excessive emphasis on the word adore.
With a skeptical smile, River angled her head. “I hope you mean it.”
I nuzzled my nose with hers. “You just told me to lie about it even if I don’t, so now you’ll never be sure, will you?”
“You like my cooking.” There was a bit of uncertainty in her tone.
With a smile, I nodded. “A hundred percent, but not as much as I like feasting on your gorgeous body.” I took River’s mind off food, secrets, and her past, as I devoured her in all the best ways.
