A Small Slip
Serena
The next four days were the happiest in my life.
Nathan and I put our phones away and lived in a bubble of nature, relaxation, food, and marathon sex sessions. I was no virgin, but Nathan’s skill as a lover was in a whole different category than any of my previous boyfriends. He taught me what my body was capable of, and with both of us being in excellent shape, we made love every chance we got. Nathan had a distinctive look in his eyes when he wanted sex, and it always ignited an insatiable hunger inside me. We had done it on every surface in the house, and by Saturday, we had only three condoms left.
“Tomorrow, we’ll have to go to the nearest town and get some more,” Nathan declared when we were in the middle of a game of Scrabble, and the subject came up.
“Yeah,” I agreed and fought back the crazy woman inside me who was playing with the idea of how good it would feel without protection.
“What’s wrong? Why are you rubbing your face like that?”
“I don’t know what’s going on, but the way I feel about you is kind of extreme. Like I literally had an insane part of me consider doing it without protection.”
Nathan picked up a letter tile and rolled it between his fingers. “We already did it a little in the lake. Only the tip, but still.”
“I know. That’s what I mean. There’s something about you that makes me lose my rational senses.” I laughed. “It’s a good thing we didn’t go to Vegas.”
Nathan kept toying with the Scrabble piece in his hand. “What are you saying? Would you have married me if I’d proposed to you?”
I chuckled. “Who knows? If we were drunk or I was high on all the orgasms you keep giving me, I might have.”
Nathan’s smile widened, and he wiggled his brow. “They have priests in Sweden too.”
We laughed together for a moment before I asked, “You would never do that, would you?”
It took him a moment to answer like he was thinking it over. “I can’t say that I wouldn’t. I’ve never felt this way about anyone.”
I opened my mouth and closed it again. “You would marry a woman after being with her for four days?”
“Not any woman, but you… yes, I think I would. Honestly, when you asked me, my first thought was that I would regret it if I didn’t.”
“But we live in different countries.”
“We could change that.” Nathan looked serious. “I have a brother who lives in the US already.”
“You would move to be with me?”
“Yes, unless you want to live in Ireland or England. I have dual citizenship because I was born in England and have lived in Ireland since I was three. If we married, we could stay together in one of those three countries.”
I looked down at the Scrabble board and back up at Nathan. “Do you realize what we’re discussing? This is crazy talk.”
He didn’t break into laughter and agree with me. Instead, Nathan watched me with a stern expression on his face. “All I’m saying is that I don’t want what we have to end.”
“No. I don’t want that either.” The atmosphere had turned very intense as we sat with our souls bared and looked into each other’s eyes.
“Good.” Nathan drew in a noisy breath and moved in his chair, breaking the eye contact and looking down at the piece in his hands.
“Yes. Good.” I picked up the small green sack and dove in for another letter, and on we went with our game as if we hadn’t just spoken about making the most significant commitment of our lives.
We ate leftovers and went for an evening walk after dinner.
“How many relationships have you been in? I mean, realrelationships,” Nathan asked me.
“Not that many. I was a child when I began acting, and it quickly took off. After that, I didn’t go to a normal school anymore, and so my contact with kids my own age was limited. When I was seventeen, I played in a movie calledCats Don’t Lie. Did you see it?”
“No.”
