“You dog.” He gasped. “You lucky lucky dog.” His laughter was infectious. “Details, I want details,” he pressured.
“Na-huh.” A small chuckle escaped me. “I don’t kiss and tell.”
“Fuuuckkkk, man. I can’t believe this shit. My best friend had sex with the sexiest woman on the planet.” He made a loud cheering sound and was still laughing when I broke through his delirious state.
“So what do I do now?”
His laughter died down. “What do you mean?”
“I think I’m falling in love with her, and it sucks.”
“No no no… you can’t fall in love with her, man. She’ll crush you like a bug when she’s done playing with you.”
“But what if she isn’t playing? What if she wants a relationship with me?”
He went silent.
“Rick… are you there?”
“Yeah, I’m here.”
“I think there’s something real between us?”
“Look, I hate to be the nay-sayer, but don’t you think you’re being a little naïve here? I mean it’s freakingCleo, man.”
“Her name is Chloe,” I corrected him. “And beneath all that glamour there’s someone really sweet and insecure. It’s Chloe I’m falling for – not Cleo.”
“Whatever, but just don’t get your hopes up, okay? You’re probably just the flavor of the month before she moves on to some hot celebrity.”
I clenched my jaws when he voiced what I had been fearing all along.
“But then again, it might be a new version of Cinderella and you get your fairy-tale ending,” Rick added.
I rubbed the bridge of my nose knowing how unlikely that was. “I’m screwed, ain’t I?”
“Are you still with her?”
“She’s out with her sister, but I’m on my way back to her place right now.”
“When are you coming back here?”
“The plan was the day after tomorrow, but after last night, I’m not sure what will happen between us.”
A deep, suggestive laugh came from Rick. “Hopefully a lot more of the same – huh?”
“It’s not all about sex.”
“Riiiight.”
I rolled my eyes but smiled. “Talk to you later, okay?”
“Yup… and just so you know: I’ve never been more envious of you, my friend.”
“Got it.” I hung up and squeezed the steering wheel, Rick’s words filling my head. Was I a naïve fool for thinking Chloe and I might have a future together?
