Running steps on the stairs interrupted our conversation. I stood up when Violet came down, her hair still wet and her expression serious.
“You want some tea?” she asked and gave me a hug.
“I prefer coffee.”
“Okay.”
I followed her to her kitchen while Jake stayed in the living room and turned on the TV.
“Tell me what’s bothering you,” she said.
I thought about how to say it but decided to just say it without a filter. “I slept with Chloe.”
Violet was filling the coffee machine with water and looked back at me. “And?”
“And I’m confused about what to do.”
“What do you want to do?”
“Stay in her bed forever.” I groaned and hid my head in my hands.
Violet came to sit across from me.
“Then what’s the problem?”
“You know what it is. I’m supposed to be with a Native American, and even if I was willing to walk away from that promise, I can’t see us being happy together. We’re simply too different.
Violet reached out and touched my shoulder. “You want to come into this house and talk about two people being too different for love? Need I remind you that Jake is a scientist who believes in hard data and I’m a psychic medium who uses my sixth sense constantly?”
“He said that he’s starting to believe,” I said and threw a nod in the direction of the living room.
“Took him long enough.” She smiled.
“But Chloe is…” I sighed.
“A handful. I know.”
“That’s putting it mildly.”
“Which means she’ll need someone grounded and wise to support her and guide her,” Violet argued.
I scratched my chin. “I can’t imagine myself on the red carpet.”
“Why not? You would look very handsome in a suit.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Look, Adam. I would prefer for you to work this out for yourself, but yesterday when I told you about seeing your future, I held something back.”
“What?” My heart was racing in my chest and I was holding my breath.
“The night you slept here, I had a vision about you.
“I saw you with three children around you and they were light-skinned.”
“So?”
“So one of them had the clearest green eyes, and I’m smart enough to know that they were of mixed race.”
