“What are you saying?”
“They were your children, Adam.”
“How do you know?”
“Because they called you daddy.”
She got up to get the coffee. “Since the night you spent with me, I’ve known that the mother of your children wouldn’t be a Native American.”
“What else did you see? You spoke about money,” I asked.
“True, I got the impression you were well off, but I can’t tell you anything specific. Sometimes it’s just a feeling.”
“You think Chloe could be that woman?”
Violet poured a cup and held it out to me. “Do you?”
I wasn’t sure if theyesthat came from within was a wish or my intuition. “I don’t know,” I answered honestly. “Yesterday, I was willing to go all in. You know, give it a chance to see if we could make it work somehow.”
“And?”
“And sexually we’re very compatible, but then this morning she won’t hold my hand on the street and suddenly I’m being chased by photographers asking me questions.”
Violet listened without interrupting.
“Chloe is…” I tried to find the right words. “I mean, there’s this special connection between us and I care about her. Even though she’s annoying too, you know?”
“Nobody is perfect.”
“I get that, and I’m not looking for perfection. But then again, she’s kind of too perfect – with her beauty and all the money.” I was rambling as I finally let out all my confused thoughts.
“People would look at us and wonder what the hell she’s doing with a poor-ass Native like me.”
“Adam,” Violet whispered and took my hand.
I looked up and met her warm eyes. “Yes?”
“This isn’t you. For her to make you doubt yourself this way… I’ve never seen you anything but assertive and confident. Where is this coming from?”
I bit the inside of my chin. “That’s because you’ve only known me as an adult. I used to be a troubled kid, and if Onava hadn’t taken me in and worked with me so intensely, I have no idea what would have happened to me.”
“Tell me.”
“I was full of anger and resentment after growing up with an abusive mom and being left behind by my dad. I would break stuff and get into fights constantly.”
“But you’re not like that anymore.”
“No, Ona taught me to go within and connect to my higher self. And yet, Chloe is bringing all my insecurities to the surface again.”
“You think she’s going to leave you behind like your farther did?”
“Why wouldn’t she?”
“Because you’re an amazing person and she’s in love with you.”
“But even if that’s true…” I shook my head, with a big fat knot in my chest. “How would we make it work? I’m too proud to have her buy me things and she’s used to a lifestyle I can’t afford.”
Violet leaned back in her chair. “Ahh, I see.”
