Aiden cocked his head towards me. “Meet your newest employee, Sis.”
Shane’s smile grew, and she actually clasped her hands together in front of her as if this is the best news she’s heard in forever. She had a…strange aura that just kind of made you want to hug the shit out of her. “Oh, that’s so awesome!” she gushed. “I get to have all my sisters-in-law with me.”
“Uh-”
Shane flapped a hand at me, while Aiden chuckled beside me. “Give it up, Sophia,” she said, grinning. “My sweet Michael is never going to let you go. You’ll probably be a Buchanan before the week is out.”
My head swiveled back and forth between her and Aiden. “You guys are so weird,” I replied, still not used to them. I mean, I thought I was strange, but the Buchanan clan was super strange. Who in the hell believes in love at first sight, anyway?
Aiden laughed and pretty much confirmed what Michael had said. “You have no idea.” Then the jerk winked. “But you will soon enough.”
I turned from him to Shane and asked, “Do you actually have a legitimate job for me?”
She scoffed. “With your IQ? I have a million legitimate jobs for you!”
Chapter 22
Michael~
I sat in my office and wondered what Sophia was doing. Aiden had called me this morning and told me about his run in with Sophia and that bitch, Katrina, and how he transferred her to Shane’s department. And as much as I loved the idea that Sophia was now working with the girls, I was still head of HR and fucking her was not doing anyone any favors.
I needed to marry her. And I needed to marry hernow.
Our situation was a little more precarious than Aiden’s and Denise’s because Aiden had manipulated some facts to make it appears as if they had been dating before he took over the reins. The second Aiden laid eyes on Denise, he knew where he was headed with her, and so, he had taken preemptive steps to prevent a scandalous fallout.
Sophia’s solitary reputation was legendary, and no one would believe we were dating before the night of the party. And, while I didn’t give a fuck what people said about me, I gave a huge fuck about what people said regarding her.
I had my elbows propped on my desk, head in my hands trying to figure out how to get Sophia to marry me, when the woman in question walked into my office.
The seconds my eyes found hers, it was like my soul settled into a peaceful lull. “Sophia…”
She smiled and kept walking until she rounded my desk, planted her palms flat on my desk, and propped herself up to sit down on top of it.
I looked up at her and ignored her ban on me smiling. “Hey, baby.”
Sophia got right to the point. “So, I suppose you heard about my transfer and that I’m now working for Shane?”
I leaned back in my chair and nodded. “Yeah, Aiden called me after he left you guys this morning.”
“This is all so inappropriate, Michael, but I’m finding I care less and less as I get to know your family better,” she admitted.
It was like fucking music to my ears.
“My family’s pretty amazing,” I agreed.
Her face turned serious, and she addressed the topic I was dreading. “What happened with your father?”
I took a deep breath and told her the truth. “After we left my office, the guys cleaned him up and were able to get him home without anyone seeing…uh, the state he was in. We have a private access elevator that goes straight from the building’s garage to our floor.”
She started nibbling at her bottom lip. “What did your mother say?”
I snorted.
Mom was turning out to be just as ruthless as Harold.
“When they dragged him into the house, they dragged him into his study and Mom came running in to see what was going one. She took one look at her husband and asked what happened. Mason told her-sparing her no details, even the part about you offering to kill him yourself.”
She winced, and I loved her for it. It showed that she was impulsive, but still compassionate. “I probably shouldn’t recruit people if I’m going to kill someone, huh? If I can’t do it alone, I probably shouldn’t do it. That’s how people get caught.” I cocked my head at her ridiculous statement. I mean, she had a point, but I couldn’t believe she was discussion murder so casually.
