Granted, I didn’t know Aiden Buchanan that well, but I always thought of him as the easiest of the four. He wasn’t looking easy now, though. “Is that so?”

“We…well, I was just…” Katrina started blathering like a fool. “I…well, she can’t just-”

Aiden put his hand up to stop Katrina’s ramblings. “Ms. Roth, I am very well aware of Ms. Martella’s employment history with us and I’d say that she’s entitled to have a couple of off days after her impeccable employment record, don’t you think?”

Her face paled. “Mr. Buch-”

Aiden put his hand up again to stop her once more. “Sophia, gather your stuff and follow me, please.”

I didn’t argue. I turned and went to get my purse when Aiden’s voice stopped me. “Gather everything from your workstation, as you’ll be working for Mrs. Buchanan now, with my approved transfer.”

I turned back to him wide-eyed. “Which Mrs. Buchanan?”

He smiled, and damn, the man was hot. “I’m sorry,” he said. “Shane. I’m referring to Shane. You’ll be working for her now in her department.”

I was about to comment, but Katrina turned out to be stupider than I originally gave her credit for. “You can’t do that, Mr. Buchanan,” she claimed. “Her transfer has to go through proper HR channels and-”

Aiden arched a brow and his voice was Arctic cold. “Michael Buchanan will be happy to deal with her transfer, Ms. Roth,” he told her. “He’ll also be happy to deal with your upcoming annual review. So, you might want to watch how you treat his fiancé in the future.”

Katrina gasped, and I smiled.

Fake engagement or not, it was nice to see Katrina being put in her place. And it didn’t even matter to me or not if Shane Buchanan had a spot for me or not.

I ignored a shocked Katrina and gathered my stuff, which consisted of the picture of Porkchop, my cat, my purse and coat. I powered down my computer and left my station as is. The work on the desk was, now, Katrina’s problem.

I looked up at Aiden and smiled. “I’m ready, Aiden,” I beamed and further ignored Katrina’s second gasp.

Aiden threw his arm around my shoulders and smiled down at me. “Let’s go, Sis.”

I’d never felt so…accepted before and I left Aiden’s arm where it was and walked, happily, down the hallway with him, not caring about the shocked looks on everyone’s faces.

As soon as we entered the elevator and Aiden hit the button to take us to Shane’s floor, I turned to him and asked, “Is there really a job with Shane?”

Aiden chuckled. “If there isn’t, there is now,” he replied cheekily.

I groaned. “This is a total abuse of power, Aiden. I mean, I get that you guys are the boss, but this looks bad.”

He laughed. “So, report me to HR, then.”

I looked up at him and he winked. “You guys have got to be the most unconventional group of powerhouses I have ever met,” I mumbled.

Aiden cocked his head at me. “Have you met many powerhouses?”

Okay. He’s got me there.

“What if someone sues for…favoritism or…nepotism or whatever,” I asked. I was really worried about how badly this would look for Michael. It seemed like I was the only one who was concerned about his being head of HR.

“They can’t, Sophia,” he said as the doors swooshed open. “Once you guys get married, you’ll own this building, along with the seven of us. Well, us and Mom.”

I tripped as I followed him out of the elevator. “Y…your mom?”

He stopped and turned to face me. “After yesterday, Harold…well, Harold won’t be a problem anymore.” I didn’t know what to say to that. “And, Mom…well, she failed the first half of our lives, but she’s been coming through like a champ these past few years. You’ll like her.”

“I think I’m going to faint,” I breathed out.

“Don’t,” he said, reaching for me. “Michael will kill me if anything ever happened to you.”

Before I could reply, Shane Buchanan was walking towards us; the kindest smile on her face. God, it was like looking into the sun; she was so warm and comforting. “Aiden, Sophia,” she greeted, coming to a stop in front of us. “What are you guys doing?”
