After the hardest appointment he had done by far, he was still trying to recover, and his shoulder hurt like a bitch.
His skin was so tight around his torn rotator cuff and it didn’t seem as if it would loosen.
He did everything he could to get it to loosen; daily exercises and rubbing the lotion and medicine the doctor had prescribed but it didn’t seem to be helping.
He didn’t want to go in for another surgery on it, and yet knew it was most likely inevitable.
But his therapist said he didn’t have to wear the sling anymore, and that it would help with more range of motion if he didn’t.
He was thrilled. And wanted nothing more than to start doing more things now that he could.
Including driving his own car.
He had Grace drop him off at his Gran’s house and with a kiss to Grace’s cheek, he thanked her and then walked up to the house.
He went inside and Gran was sitting on the couch, crocheting.
It was a small blue blanket and Reid knew it was for Brek and Sienna.
He hated that he still didn’t know most of the people in town and Brek was one of them.
Yes, Brek had helped him and hired him to be one of his Deputy’s, but since he had been in the hospital, he hadn’t been able to have many visitors.
Gran smiled up at him, “Hey there sweetie. How are you? Oh! You aren’t wearing the sling! Reid! This is so exciting!”
He grinned at her, “My shoulder needs to have more range of motion, so while I still need to be careful, I don’t have to wear it while I do most things. I want to go for a drive. It’s been so long since I have been able to.”
Gran pointed to where his keys were hanging, and Reid grinned at her and then leaned down and kissed her cheek.
“Thanks Gran. I love you. Now that I am not so needy and that Kian finally claimed Karalee, I will be moving back here. We all came to help you and we all left.”
Gran snorted, “Reid, I don’t need a babysitter. I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself.”
Reid laughed, “I know. But after your incident, that was why we moved. To be able to be here for you.”
Gran patted his hand, “Sweetheart, I know you did. But I am not hurting, I can do things for myself and I am just fine.”
Reid smiled, “I just didn’t want you to think we were abandoning you.”
Gran leaned in and hugged him gently, “Reid, I am thrilled you are here. All of you. Making a new start for yourselves and finding the ones you love. Don’t think I haven’t heard about your love. That Mila is a beautiful girl with a beautiful soul. I know she is the perfect girl for you.”
He smiled and she went on, “I don’t need you to live in my house for me to be happy. In my eyes, my house in Illinois was sad and depressing after your grandpa died and then this one was ruined after getting stabbed, and yet it's completely changed now. I love what it has become. What it symbolizes now. Because of it, none of you would have left your lives in Chicago, and Emery wouldn’t have found Trace, Kian wouldn’t have finally claimed Karalee and you wouldn’t have found Mila. So this house, once something that was a horrible thing is now one of joy and happiness. My family surrounds me and you all get to start the futures you never dreamed were possible.”
Reid hugged his Gran tight. “You are right Gran. While I still hate that you went through what you did, I will forever be grateful that we took the chance and left the lives that we didn’t really live.”
She smiled, “I knew there was a reason why I picked this town. I could have moved somewhere in Illinois to stay close to where Grandpa was buried, but I had a heart to heart with him and asked him where I should move. And there was a magazine next to my chair. And it showed the small towns of Colorado. I just knew that Silver Springs was important, and I never looked back. Just packed up my life, found this house and that was it. And I am grateful to your Grandpa for showing us all the way here.”
Reid kissed his Gran one more time and stood, “I am too. I love you Gran.”
“Love you too sweetheart. You get working on another granddaughter for me. Plus, I want great grandkids.”
Reid laughed out loud, and then saluted, “Will do.”
He walked to where his truck keys were hanging on the wall and winked at his Gran one more time and then out to his truck.
He climbed in the cab and just sat. Putting his head back on the headrest and just breathing in the freedom that being in his truck represented.
He opened his eyes and started the truck up. His shoulder pulled a little, but he ignored it and backed out of the driveway, happy to be driving again.
