“Thank you.” She sniffled.

I brought her hand to my lips and kissed it.

The next few weeks would be hard, but I didn’t plan on going into my marriage with this hanging over us. Camille fucked up when she misplaced her anger, and I promised myself that it would be a decision she would live to regret. We pulled into my parent’s driveway, and Mr. White came outside.

Before I had the car in park good, he pulled on the door handle.

“Munchkin.”

“Daddy! Why would she do that? Bullying me in grade school and almost getting me arrested wasn’t good enough? Why would she bring my business to the internet?” Mr. White wrapped his arms around his daughter, and she sobbed into his chest.

“I’m not sure, Munchkin, but I know she won’t get away with it.”

And she wouldn’t.

I put that on my life. The three of us walked into the house, and the family room had been overtaken by bodies. I greeted everyone and waited for Finley to do the same so I could pull her toward me. Her body was rigid as Pops introduced everyone.

The lawyers stood and walked over to where Finley and I stood.

“A cease and desist has been issued to the gossip blog. I need the names of everyone that will go on the lawsuit. Are you familiar with Benny Douglas?”

“Unfortunately, he’s my ex-boyfriend. He’s just mad I left him?—”

“Nah.” I cut Finley off from whatever excuse she was about to give. “Add him to the list. He made the same money comment before, so his bitter ass can be on it as well.”

We talked more about the next steps and what we needed to do.

After a while, Finley and I were separated because my father needed to speak to me. Without a word from me, Von followed us to the back of the house. I figured it had something to do with Diamonds & Moore, and I was right. When we made it to his office, Von and I sat in front of Pops’ desk as he sat on the edge closest to me. He looked vexed, and that had me worried.

Pops sighed and folded his hands in his lap.

“I can’t prove it, but I think Steven had something to do with Camille’s actions. He knows about the family-first focus and may try to use this scandal as a way to get you out of your seat. We need to get to the board first.”

“I think he did, too, because seeing Camille with Steven yesterday wasn’t a coincidence. When I didn’t respond to Camille how she wanted, she probably was given the green light to make herself out to be the victim.”

“Well, she won’t be for long . . .” he muttered.

Pops, Von, and I went over strategies on how to handle Steven if he got beside himself. The side meeting took about thirty minutes, and when we rejoined everyone, Finley found herself nestled right against my body.

I might not be her safe space at this moment, but I knew it wouldn’t take long before I was.

Two WeeksLater

“We’re always doing things I like to do. I’m not complaining, but I don’t want our marriage to be one-sided. Let’s do something today that interests you.”

Kairo smoothed his hand over my head and smirked.

I hit him in his chest and scoffed. We were in the theater room to watch a movie but had yet to select anything. He and I were content just being wrapped in each other’s arms.

The last two weeks had been crazy, so this moment of peace was needed.

“Baby, whatever you’re into is what I’m down for. Before you, it was all work and no play. I’m thoroughly enjoying seeing life through your eyes. I don’t need much. This right here is perfect.”

I smiled at him, and he leaned down to kiss my lips.

“I’ve had us cooped up in here for weeks. But I’m ready to go outside. Your home has plenty to offer, but I miss flying free and my garden.”

“Our home.”
